The NHTSA is planning to include an emphasis on electronic accident prevention technologies as part of an effort to update its auto rating system.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is planning to include an emphasis on electronic accident prevention technologies as part of an effort to update its auto rating system.

San Diego car accident lawyers believe that it’s high time that the agency recognizes the fact that many automakers are now investing in technologies that don’t  just protect motorists in an accident, but also prevent accidents.

National Highway Traffic Safety Administration chief David Strickland spoke at a meeting of the Society of Automotive Analysts during a press meet for the North American International Auto Show.  According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration chief, his agency is looking at credit for automakers that include electronic crash avoidance technologies in their automobiles.  The point is not only to reward automakers who include accident avoidance technologies in their vehicles, but also to encourage awareness of these technologies among consumers.

Since the inception of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, there has been a greater focus on crashworthiness, or the capacity of a vehicle to protect occupants during the crash.  However, over the past few years, automakers have been more focused on developing technology that actually helps prevent accidents.  A number of recent systems that have become popular and many that are still in development are all centered on reducing the risk of accidents.

It doesn’t hurt to provide automakers with an incentive to include accident prevention technologies in their vehicles.  The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration boosted the use of electronic stability control systems by giving automakers credit for installing the systems as part of its test ratings.  Eventually, electronic stability control systems were made mandatory in all models beginning with the 2012 model year.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has noted the success of electronic stability control systems in reducing the number of rollover accidents that occur every year.  Strickland has not identified the kind of technologies could possibly be included in any new crash test rating system at the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.  However, San Diego car accident lawyers know that there are a number of candidates that could be included in the test ratings.  For instance, a number of automobiles now come with forward collision warning systems that warn motorists to an object or pedestrian in the path of the automobile.  There are also Lane departure warning systems that alert the driver when his car is in danger of drifting away from his lane.  These systems have been found to be very useful in helping prevent drowsy driving accidents when a motorist is asleep at the wheel.
