NHTSA Launches Campaign against Drunk Driving Accidents

September 4th, 2011
drunk driving campaign

In 2009, there were 11,000 people killed in accidents related to drunk driving

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is launching a renewed effort against drunk driving.  The $13 million initiative will include television and radio drunk driving campaigns and stepped-up enforcement efforts.

The federal administration is introducing a new campaign called Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over.  This new campaign will replace the Drunk Driving.  Over the Limit.  Under Arrest. campaign that the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has promoted over the past few years.  The new campaign will run on television and radio, alerting motorists to the dangers of drunk driving.  The new campaign is expected to run over the next five years.

To coincide with the launch of the new campaign, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration also released the results of a new study about the risks of drunk driving.  According to the results of the study, the highest risk of being involved in a drunk driving accident occurs between midnight and 3 AM.  In 2009, there were 11,000 people killed in accidents related to drunk driving.  Out of these, one out of 4 deaths occurred between midnight and 3 AM.  Additionally, according to National Highway Traffic Safety Administration statistics, alcohol-related accidents dropped by 7.4% between 2008 and 2009.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s new campaign coincides with increased enforcement efforts around the Labor Day weekend.  Across the country, more than 10,000 police departments are taking part in advanced enforcement efforts in order to pull drunk drivers off the streets.  In California, police department are stepping up enforcement efforts, resulting in dozens of arrests.  In San Mateo County, the Avoid the 23 campaign which has been used over the past twenty years, has resulted in dozens of DUI arrests already.  The campaign is likely to continue till the end of the Labor Day weekend.

The risks of being involved in intoxicated driving-related accidents increase over the Labor Day weekend, when more numbers of drunk drivers are on the streets.  This Labor Day weekend, Los Angeles car accident lawyers would advise motorists to exercise extra caution while driving.  Avoid driving under the influence of alcohol.  Try taking less-traveled routes to your destination to avoid holiday traffic.  Switch off all distractions like cell phones and texting devices while driving.

Staying safe can involve not just preventing accidents, but also increasing your chances of surviving one.  Always a seat belt while driving, and ensure that everybody else in your car is safely buckled up too.  Children should be safely restrained in car safety seats or booster seats depending on their age and weight.
