New High-Tech Football Helmets Promise to Precisely Diagnose a Brain Injury

Football helmets that measure the intensity and severity of a head injury could make it easier for doctors to precisely diagnose a brain injury and  also even spine injuries.  Researchers have been evaluating head injuries in football players who wear such helmets, and have been intrigued by the results.

These high-tech football helmets are fitted with six battery-powered sensors inside.  The sensors are designed to detect the location as well as the severity of the impact as well the speed of the player’s head as it stops after impact.  There is also an instant warning if the person has suffered a serious head and back injury that may at least need to be evaluated.  This kind of data is very important because it is real-time data, and gives a clear picture of what happened at the time of impact.  Such information could be useful to determine the extent of the injury.

Researchers are analyzing the new technology to determine the value of the data when it comes to precisely diagnose a brain injury.  According to them, the data that they receive from the helmets could one day lead to the production of much safer helmets that substantially protect football players from head and brain injuries.

The high-tech helmets have been used by football players in Illinois for four years now.  Researchers have found from the study of these helmets that these devices detect what happens at the moment of impact.  In fact the data that the researchers have obtained from these helmets shows that the top as well as the sides of the head are especially vulnerable to a head injury during a collision.

They have also found new insight into the causes of neck and spinal injuries during a collision on a football field. Researchers hope to use the data to develop safer helmets that can be used not just by football players, but also by bicyclists, motorcyclists, skiers and baseball players.

The results of the studies are very promising, and Los Angeles brain injury attorneys would like to see stronger, safer helmets, that do an even better job of protecting motorcyclists and bicyclists from brain injuries.  However, the bigger challenge is to get more numbers of people wearing helmets.

There are still far too many motorcyclists out there who choose to ride a motorcycle without a helmet, at great risk to their safety.  In any collision between a motorcycle and an automobile, it is the motorcycle rider who is at a higher risk of suffering a serious brain injury.  These injuries can be fatal or life altering.  While a motorcycle helmet may not be a guarantee against fatal or even serious injuries, it can significantly reduce the risks of suffering a brain injury.
