New DOT Anti-Distracted Driving Video PSA Targets Teen Drivers

Using a cellphone while driving can lead to fatal car accidents

Any San Diego car accident lawyer will tell you that initiatives against distracted driving tend to neglect the most at-risk category of drivers- teenage motorists.  The US Department of Transportation wants to change that.  The agency is releasing a new distracted driving video PSA that targets teenagers in time for the busy holiday traveling season.

The product service announcement is titled OMG, and will be shown throughout the month of December at movie screens and gas stations around the country.  The clip is different from the typical traffic safety PSAs that you see, and is very teen-friendly.  It’s edgier, and uses text lingo like OMG and L8R to get the message across to teenage drivers-no text or phone call is worth your life.  What really works for this particular public service announcement is that it uses popular shorthand text messages to get through to teenagers.

According to the Transportation Secretary, there is a dire need to get the anti-distracted driving message across to teenage drivers, because this category of drivers is at a special risk of distracted driving.  The agency is collaborating with Regal Cinemas and Outcast PumpTop TVs to reach more teenagers through the PSAs.

The year’s busiest travel season is coming up, and it’s especially necessary that teen drivers be educated about the dangers of texting while driving.  There are going to be more numbers of teen drivers on the streets over the next few weeks, and many of them will be too focused on texting and checking status updates on Facebook, to pay attention to the road.

Unfortunately, many efforts to reduce the incidence of distracted driving involving teenage drivers have been unsuccessful.  Most of today’s teenagers can’t imagine a world without cell phones, and as a result, it’s hard for these motorists to fully appreciate the risks when they are texting, or having a conversation on a cell phone while driving.  While many states, including California ban the use of texting while driving for teenage motorists, these bans have had little effect in actually alerting these drivers to the dangers of distracted driving.

The Department Of Transportation has spearheaded a massive initiative to end distracted driving across the country.  Since 2009, the Department of Transportation has initiated a number of strategies, including two summits devoted solely to combating distracted driving, and has attacked the use of cell phones while driving by commercial truck and bus drivers.  The Department of Transportation has also been pushing for states to enforce their own laws against texting and the use of cell phones while driving.
