Naturalistic Study into Motorcycle Accident Prevention Begins

August 29th, 2011
Accident Prevention for motorcycles

The number of motorcycle accident related fatalities has remained high.

The world’s first naturalistic study into motorcycle accident prevention has begun, with the first motorcycle rider having data acquisition video cameras installed on his motorcycle.  The study aims at gathering real-time, accurate data about motorcycle accidents, and to help develop ideas to prevent these.

Los Angeles motorcycle accident lawyers have been very concerned about the high rate of motorcycle fatalities.  The numbers of motorcycle accident fatalities has remained consistent over the past few years, even as there has been an overall decline in the number of people being killed in traffic accidents.  In fact, last year, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration announced a slight decline in the number of motorcycle accident fatalities, for the first time in eleven years.  It was a small decline, and Los Angeles motorcycle accident attorneys believe this was likely due to the fact that there were fewer motorcycles sold during the recession, and there was lower motorcycle riding overall.

Part of the reason for the spike in motorcycle accidents over the past decade been the fact that there has been no new data about motorcycle crash prevention since the Hurt Report was published back in 1981.  The path-breaking Hurt Report found that most motorcycle accidents were the result of failure to yield by motorists, and that helmets could play a major role in preventing motorcycle crash realities.  For several decades, the Hurt Report was used as the foundation for motorcycle crash prevention measures, and the Hurt Report is part of the reason why so many states have mandatory motorcycle helmet laws.

However, the Hurt Report was published in 1981, and the challenges facing a motorcyclist in the year 2011 are vastly different from a few decades ago.  Not only are there more motorcyclists now, but they are sharing the streets with more numbers of faster and more powerful automobiles.  Additionally, motorcycles in 2011 are sleeker, lighter and even more powerful than back in the 80s.

The Motorcycle Safety Foundation last year announced that it would collaborate with the Virginia Tech Transportation Institute to conduct a naturalistic study of motorcycle  accident prevention.  The study would include the installation of data acquisition video cameras on certain select motorcycles.  Over the next year, the researchers will analyze the motorcyclists’ riding.  The video cameras will provide real-time, precise, and accurate data about motorcyclist behavior.  More importantly, the video cameras will capture exactly what happens just before an accident, which is not possible in other types of motorcycle safety studies.  Researchers believe that having access to such data will help identify the specific causes contributing to motorcycle accidents, and help safety agencies develop measures to prevent these accidents.
