Nap Nanny Baby Recliner Recalled after Infant Death

The US Consumer Product Safety Commission and a Pennsylvania-based baby product manufacturer are announcing the recall of approximately 30,000 Nap Nanny baby recliners.  The recall comes after the death of a four-month-old girl from Michigan.  The baby had been sleeping in a recliner that was placed in a crib.  She was found hanging over the side of the recliner between the recliner and the side of the crib.  She had been secured with a harness at the time of the accident.

According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, it is aware of at least one other incident in which a baby became trapped when the recliner was placed in a crib.  The baby fell over the side of the recliner, and became trapped between the side of the Nap Nanny and the side of the crib.  This happened even though the baby was secured with a harness.  Fortunately, in this incident, the baby only suffered a minor injury to the forehead.

Besides these two incidents, the Consumer Product Safety Commission and the company that manufactures these recliners, Baby Matters LLC, have received at least 22 reports of  infants hanging out of the recliner, or falling out of the recliner altogether.  In most of these incidents, the infants were between four and five months old.

The problem seems to be seen more frequently when the baby recliner is placed inside a crib.  This is contrary to the manufacturer’s instructions.  If the recliner is placed in a crib, the baby may be able to roll over the side of the recliner.  This can cause the baby to become entrapped between the side of the recliner and the side of the crib, creating a potentially dangerous suffocation and entrapment hazard.  Harnesses can keep the babies secured in their recliner.  However, if the Velcro straps that are located inside the recliner, are not properly secured with the D. rings on the foam, the risk of an adverse incident can increase.  There may also be a greater risk of entrapment and suffocation if the parent is using an older generation Nap Nanny recliner that does not come with D. rings.

These recliners must not, under any circumstances, be placed inside a crib, play yard or any other confined space.  If the baby is not secured properly, it can fall over the side of the recliner, sustaining serious injuries, or can become trapped.  Further, the Consumer Product Safety Commission is warning parents not to place the recliner on high countertops, tables or other surfaces.  The Nap Nanny must always be used on the floor.  Avoid placing things around the recliner.

The recliners were sold at major retailers across the country.  They were also sold on the company’s website at www.napNanny com.  There are a number of models of the Nap Nanny involved in the recall.  California injury lawyers would advise that parents who have a first generation Nap Nanny that came without the rings, must stop using the product altogether.  These parents can contact the firm to receive an $80 discount voucher against the price of a new recliner.  Parents who have a second-generation recliner that comes with the D rings must check out the company’s website for product usage instructions and videos before using the product.
