Multi Vehicle Accident in Los Angeles Kills One Person

One person has been confirmed dead in a multi vehicle crash involving at least eight vehicles in Los Angeles. The accident occurred on the 101 freeway.   The victim was declared dead at the scene.  Several people have been injured in the crash. The California Highway Patrol says that at least one big rig was involved in the crash.

What set the crash off is unclear at this point. However the California Highway Patrol says there was a slight drizzle at the time of the accident.  Investigations into the crash are ongoing.

A pile-up involving several vehicles can be the result of numerous factors.

Speeding is one of the most common causes of multi-vehicle accidents in California.  Speed limits are set for a reason, and driving above or even below these limits, can increase the risk of an accident. Speed-related collisions are some of the most destructive crashes. A driver traveling at excessive speeds is at a higher risk of losing control of the vehicle, and crashing into others on the highway.  When a vehicle traveling at high speeds crashes into another vehicle that’s traveling even at normal speeds, the consequences can be devastating. Thee collisions are high impact crashes that often result in serious injuries and deaths.

Drunk driving is another factor that could result in a motorist losing control of his vehicle, and crashing into other cars on the highway. Alcohol acts in several ways to increase the risk of a crash.

Driving under the influence doesn’t have to mean driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs only.  Prescription drugs are also linked to a large number of crashes.  A motorist does not have to be driving under the influence of narcotics or non-prescription drugs to be driving recklessly.  Even something innocuous as cold medication or a cough syrup can leave a person feeling drowsy or worse, disoriented, leading to loss of control and an accident. Some medications that are used to control hypertension and heart disease gave been found to have detrimental effects on a person’s ability to drive safely.

Distracted driving can also be a major contributing factor to multi vehicle accidents,  Distractions are likely to come from driving while using a cell phone or text messaging at the wheel.
