Motorcyclist Killed in San Diego

Some of the biggest risks facing motorcyclists come from distracted drivers

Over the weekend a forty-nine-year-old motorcyclist was killed  in  San Diego accident.  The motorcyclist was riding on Interstate 5, when his motorcycle was struck by a car.  The car was being driven by a Camp Pendleton Marine believed heading back to base.

According to police, the car which was traveling at 70 mph drifted off the fast lane and into the left lane.  The motorist then lost control of his car and veered to the right lanes, where it struck the motorcycle.  The motorcyclist was thrown off his Harley-Davidson, and sustained fatal injuries.

The Marine has told police that he was smoking at the time, when cigarette ash fell on his lap caused him to become distracted.  The California Highway Patrol is likely to recommend that the Marine be charged with vehicular manslaughter.

Almost every day, San Diego  motorcycle accident lawyers see evidence of the severe risks that motorcyclists face while riding on highways and freeways.  Motorcycle safety experts and transportation agencies recommend that motorcyclists ride safely to avoid distractions, and look out for cars.  However, very often, accidents occur even when motorcyclists have taken precautions to prevent accidents.  These accidents occur because drivers simply don’t take into consideration that they now share the roads with more numbers of motorcycles and bicycles, and need to be more cautious.

Some of the biggest risks facing motorcyclists these days come from distracted drivers.  Motorcycles have a narrow frame, and may be easier for drivers to miss.  That’s all the more reason why motorists need to be 100% focused on the task of driving.  When a driver is distracted, it’s easy for him to miss a motorcycle, causing a serious accident.  Other common causes of motorcycle accidents include speeding motorists.  Driving at safe speeds means not only driving at below the posted speed limits, but also driving at speeds that are safe for traffic, road and weather conditions.  A motorist will find it much harder to avoid a motorcyclist traveling at 100 miles an hour.

Another factor in motorcycle accidents is intoxicated driving.  Driving under the influence of alcohol may cause a motorist to strike a motorcycle with serious consequences.

There is something that motorcyclists can do to reduce injuries in an accident.  Always wear a motorcycle helmet, and wear brightly colored clothing that makes you more visible in traffic.  However, even these tips may not always be sufficient to protect a motorcyclist from accidents and injuries.
