Mother, Baby Seriously Injured in Santa Rosa Alcohol-Related Car Accident

March 9th, 2010

A mother and her eight-month-old baby are expected to recover after a serious drunk driving accident in Santa Rosa left them critically injured.

The 21-year-old woman from Clearlake Oaks was traveling in a car with her eight-month old daughter and her husband. Their Mercury Mountaineer was struck by a Ford pickup truck being driven by Santa Rosa-resident Faustina Vega Xicohtencatl. The woman still remains in critical condition. The baby’s father suffered minor injuries in the crash.

Xicohtencatl has been arrested on charges of felony DUI and driving without a valid license. He insists that he was not driving at the time of the accident. He had apparently picked up a hitchhiker who was driving and then fled the scene of the accident. According to the California Highway Patrol, Xicohtencatl was extremely intoxicated when officers arrived at the scene.

Spring break is almost here and law enforcement officers as well as Drunk Driving Injury Lawyers in California expect the usual spike in alcohol-related car crashes. The spring break season is considered party time and unfortunately, with the free-flowing alcohol and party mentality, comes an increased risk of serious accidents, injuries and fatalities. Law enforcement agencies around the state are getting ready to tackle what they see at this time of the year, which is hundreds of reckless young men and women driving under the influence. These young partiers are not only a serious risk to their own safety and that of others. Law enforcement agencies are encouraging parents to discuss the dangers of drunk driving with college-age children.  Mothers Against Drunk Driving is also getting involved in various cities across the country.

Alcohol works in various ways to contribute to an accident:

A person, who has just finished a few drinks, is likely to experience a carefree, lightheaded buzz that leaves them abandoning their usual caution.

Alcohol use also loosens inhibitions, and contributes to feelings of recklessness. This is why California accident lawyers often see drunk drivers indulging in dangerous driving practices, like speeding. Alcohol use encourages motorists to engage in unsafe driving practices that they would not have even considered, had they not been driving under the influence of alcohol.

Alcohol use also impairs a person’s sense of judgment. Driving can be a close to precise science, and when a person is not able to judge the speed or position of their own car, or that of other cars around them, they are more likely to cause an accident.

Alcohol use also lowers a person’s reaction times. His or her responses may be delayed, and they may find it harder to perform emergency maneuvers, like braking suddenly. It takes a drunk driver a longer time to react to an emergency situation, and this can increase the risk of an accident tremendously.

Driving drunk is one of the most foolish behaviors young people can indulge in. It can not only result in serious injuries, loss of license, arrests, a blemish on your record, and heartbreak for your parents and family, but can also result in death.
