A CSULB employee was killed due to a fatal elevator accident

More details are emerging about the fatal California elevator accident at Cal State Long Beach this week that killed a 48-year-old woman.  The woman, a Huntington Beach resident died when the stalled elevator crashed on her as she tried to climb out of it.

The accident apparently occurred when the woman was riding the elevator at the Cal State Long Beach Foundation building.  The elevator got stuck in between the 2nd and 3rd floor.  The woman tried to climb out of the elevator, when the car began moving again.  As she was trying to climb out, the car dropped onto her, trapping her between the floor and the elevator.  The elevator crushed her body.  Emergency rescue personnel from the Long Beach Fire Department as well as university personnel rushed to the scene, but it took rescue personnel more than an hour to remove the pound elevator off the victim.  She died at the scene of the accident. The woman was apparently an employee of Cal State Long Beach.

According to the California Department of Industrial Relations, the elevator had undergone an inspection in April, and there were no problems found with the elevator.  The California Division of Occupational Safety and Health is investigating the death.

Millions of people across the country use elevators on a daily basis, without giving much thought to their safety.  However, accidents and injuries involving malfunctioning or defective elevators and escalators are very real.  According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, approximately 30 people are killed in escalator or elevator accidents every year.  These accidents also injure more than 17,000 other people.  Most of the deaths involving elevator and escalator accidents involve workers who were working on the equipment at the time of the malfunctioning.  Other accidents involve people who are caught between elevator doors, are standing on collapsing platforms or get their feet caught in the corners of a escalator.

In any accident involving an elevator or escalator, a San Diego premises liability lawyer may be able to hold the owner of the building where the accident occurred accountable for injuries.  The elevator manufacturing company and the maintenance company may also be named in a claim.

Passengers in an elevator must take care to prevent accidents and injuries.  Before you enter an elevator, make sure that the car is aligned with the floor.  Never allow children to ride escalators and elevators unsupervised.  If you are caught inside an elevator that has stalled, push the alarm button, call maintenance and then wait for help to arrive.  Never try to exit the elevator by crawling out.  Building owners must maintain elevators regularly.
