More Car Accidents at Intersections with Flashing Lights

Car accidents at intersections with flashing lights occur more than those with only stop signs.

Car accidents at intersections with flashing lights occur more than those with only stop signs.  That information comes from a study by the University Of Texas.

According to the study which was led by a civil engineering research team, intersections with flashing lights are the most dangerous.  The researchers were investigating which types of intersections pose the highest risk of accidents.  They found that intersections with flashing lights have approximately 3 times more accidents than intersections that had only stoplights.

Intersections are the scene of some of the deadliest accidents in the United States.  About 40% of all auto accidents in the country take place at intersections.  The point of the study was to decide what makes an intersection dangerous, in order to influence future road design and engineering standards.  Data for the study came from the Texas Department of Transportation.

However, the researchers don’t seem to have a solid explanation about why intersections with flashing lights are more dangerous.  They were not able to investigate whether flashing lights confused motorists leading to an accident, or whether the flashing lights were installed at intersections that were already considered dangerous.

Further, the study also found that motorists who were exiting highways were more likely to be involved in an accident.  This usually occurred because the motorist was driving at excessive speeds, or switching lanes dangerously.  The findings of the study are expected to be presented next month at a meeting of the National Transportation Research Board Meeting in Washington.

Overall, the study has concluded that intersections with traffic lights are much safer than those without traffic lights, and help prevent accidents.  According to researchers, it is important to understand why certain types of intersections are more likely to cause accidents, so that transportation research and safety agencies can invest in immediate measures to reduce the risk of accidents in these sites.

San Diego car accident lawyers find that poorly designed infrastructure is a major cause of auto accidents in the U.S.  Every year, people are killed or injured in accidents that occur at badly designed intersections, on poorly maintained roads, and deficiently designed highways.  Good road design must ensure smooth flow of traffic, to reduce the risks of an accident.  This includes the integration of traffic safety devices like stoplights, smoother design of intersections and adequate numbers of safely designed marked and designated crosswalks for pedestrians.
