Los Angeles Dog Bite Risks Increase on Halloween

Dog Bite Risks

Any dog that's scared, stressed or anxious is at a high risk of biting

Come Halloween, and many children across Los Angeles will walk into strange homes, expecting candy.  What they should also expect is that many of these homes will contain dogs that are not prepared to see people dressed in strange costumes.  Dog bite risks increase on Halloween. Not surprisingly, a large number of dog bites in California are recorded over Halloween.

Los Angeles dog bite lawyers find several things about Halloween that makes it more dog-unfriendly than other holidays.  For one thing, most neighborhood homes will see plenty of little visitors out trick-or-treating on Halloween evening.  They will be dressed in costumes that may seem strange to a dog’s eye.  It’s an unfamiliar experience for a dog.  Any dog that’s scared, stressed or anxious is at a high risk of biting.

When you enjoy this holiday, make certain that you avoid those bites.

People, who have dogs, must take special precautions this Halloween.  It’s best to confine your dog in a room during the evening, when you can expect a lot of strangers coming home.  Dogs can get excited when they are near doors and gates.

Children who are out trick-or-treating must be taught to avoid unnecessary contact with dogs.  Children under the age of twelve must be supervised by parents or other adults.  Avoid eye contact with any dog.  In fact, it’s best not to have much contact even with your own pet dog while in costume.  According PawNation.com, dogs recognize both sight and smell, and may be confused by the familiar smell of an owner in a strange costume.

Don’t allow your children to feed candy or other treats to a dog.  Some owners do not want children to feed their dog at all.  Other times, the dog may get over excited and begin pestering you for treats.

Teach your child to be immobile when, and if, he’s attacked by a dog.  Dogs, who find a person in a costume struggling, are likely to get excited and bite.  However, when the person is immobile, the dog is more likely to walk away.

Teach your child try never to pet strange dogs.

If your children are planning to visit homes of people you know, call them and inform them beforehand so they can arrange to have their dog confined safely.

Every year, across 4.5 million people suffer dog bite injuries in the United States.  Over 800,000 of these people will be injured seriously enough to require medical treatment.  Children are the biggest victims of dog bite injuries.  According to some statistics, more than 50% of all children in the United States experience a dog bite by the time they reach twelve years of age.  Boys aged between five and nine are at a significantly higher risk of being involved in a dog bite.
