Los Angeles Bicyclists Concerned after a Recent DUI Accident

Bicycling groups from around Los Angeles are demanding a thorough and unbiased investigation into a recent DUI accident last month involving a driver who plowed his car into a group of bicyclists.  Several bicyclists were injured in the accident.

The bicyclist groups held a conference at Los Angeles City Hall, demanding a complete investigation into the accident.  The accident occurred in the early hours of  June 16.  The motorist crashed into a group of bicyclists who were on a midnight ride.  At least 11 riders were injured in the accident.  One of the bikers was critically injured.

The group consisted of more than 100 bicyclists riding in downtown Los Angeles.  According to some reports, the motorist was using a cell phone at the time the car slammed into the group.  For unknown reasons, the car accelerated speeds, and mowed into the group.  Several bicyclists were thrown into the air, and at least one was dragged underneath the car.  The driver is also suspected to have been driving under the influence at the time.

Soon after the accident, police decided to blame the bicyclists for the accident.  Soon after, the Los Angeles Police Department stated that the main cause of the accident was that pedestrians were in the roadway.  However, the bicyclists say that they were in the parking lane when the motorist slammed into their group.  This statement has also been confirmed by witnesses at the scene.

Understandably, the bicyclists have been disappointed at the attitude of the police.  The root cause of this accident was a driver allegedly driving under the influence and possibly even using a cell phone at the time of the accident.  Los Angeles bicycle accident lawyers often see this kind of attitude when it comes to bicycle or pedestrian accidents.  There is a tendency to blame bicyclists for any accident that involves them.

This is unfortunate because there is a heavy bicyclist population in Los Angeles, and they are at a higher risk of injuries because of attitudes like this.  Los Angeles personal injury attorneys are reminded of the infamous road rage bicycle accident incident involving a Brentwood doctor a few years ago.  That incident had infuriated by the bicycling community in Los Angeles, and had led to the Los Angeles police chief asserting that his department would review its bicycle accident reporting policies, to address bicyclist concerns.

Bicyclists are at a serious risk of being injured when they are in an accident.  In this case, many of the bicyclists have sustained serious injuries.  Many of these bicyclists are young bikers, with no jobs and no disability insurance.  They have been finding it hard to meet their medical expenses.  It doesn’t make their situation better when police focus all the blame on them, with no mention of the reckless motorist.
