Los Angeles Alternative Fuel Plant Explosion Under Investigation

August 12th, 2011
A massive alternative fuel plant explosion critically injured two workers.

A similar explosion happened in 2010 in Ventura County.

An alternative fuel plant explosion in Los Angeles is under investigation, California and Los Angeles investigators are probing the causes of the explosion which left two workers critically injured.

The explosion occurred at Rainbow of Hope in the Sylmar area of Los Angeles.  The company is engaged in developing sustainable clean water systems.  The cause of the explosion, which occurred on Wednesday, is still under investigation.  There is speculation that the explosion occurred during a procedure in which hydrogen is extracted from water.

The explosion was serious enough to tear off most of the roof, and throw two workers out of the building.  The two workers who were critically injured are in the hospital.  The blast shattered windows of nearby businesses.  Another worker at the scene suffered minor injuries.  One of the workers who was injured was an off-duty Los Angeles city firefighters.

A similar alternative fuel plant explosion had happened in Ventura County.  That explosion occurred in 2010, and killed one person.  In that case, investigators believed that something had gone wrong during a procedure to separate hydrogen and oxygen.  Investigators are not saying whether there is anything in common between these two explosions.  However, authorities in Los Angeles have contacted authorities in Ventura County as they move ahead with the investigation.  The California Division of Occupational Safety and Health is investigating the explosion.

Burn injuries and other injuries sustained in an explosion can be some of the most serious of all catastrophic injuries.  When you have been injured in an explosion on a property, there may be a number of people who can be held accountable for your injuries.  The owner of the property may be liable in your injuries.  Explosions and fires can sometimes be triggered because of the lack of well functioning firearms, smoke detectors and other equipment.  Maintenance of these devices is the responsibility of the property owner.  If the explosion was caused due to the negligence of a neighboring property owner, then that person can be held liable in a lawsuit.

Apart from landlords, manufacturers can also be held liable in explosion and fires that occur as a result of defective products.  It’s not just manufacturers who can be named by a Los Angeles personal injury lawyer in an explosion lawsuit, but also the retailers, and distributors of these defective products.  Defective gas stoves, dryers and other electrical equipment can short-circuit and explode into flames.

Sometimes a fire or explosion is the result of shoddy wiring.  If the fire is the result of improperly installed electric wiring, then your electrical contractor can be named in a lawsuit.  An explosion in an apartment building can affect not just a single apartment, but also all the other families living in the building.  In such cases, your lawsuit can name the other tenants in your building whose negligence caused the explosion.
