Intel Working on Smart Safety Technologies for Cars
Auto safety is a major buzzword these days, since numerous auto recalls have left millions of consumers worried about the vehicles. Automakers have been involved in efforts to develop smarter safety technologies that can not only reduce the risk of injuries in an accident, but can also prevent the accident from happening in the first place.
Technology companies have not been slow to recognize that there will be a huge demand for smart auto safety technologies in the years ahead. Intel has been one of the first companies to announce its grand plans for smarter cars that come with event recorders and black box recorders. The company announced these plans in Santa Clara in California last week.
The auto safety legislation that is currently pending in Congress has a provision that includes the installation of black box recorders in all vehicles. The black box recorders will provide accident reconstruction experts and investigators vital clues to determine the cause of an accident. Some models of cars already come with black box recorders, but the one that Intel is proposing will go much further than any of these to provide valuable data about an accident.
The event recorder that Intel is proposing will involve the use of video camera systems both inside and outside the car. This will allow accident reconstruction personnel to accurately define motorist behavior just before the accident. The black box recorder will work to record other important details, like whether the brakes were applied just before the accident. This will make it much easier to determine the motorist who was responsible for causing an accident. It will also make it much easier for accident reconstruction experts to properly understand witness testimony, which can sometimes be very confusing, and even conflicting.
Intel researchers say these systems can not only detect potential dangers while a person is driving, but can also act on behalf of the motorist to prevent an accident. The camera systems can also detect street signs, and can take actions to prevent the motorist from driving the wrong way. California car accident lawyers who have been concerned about the high number of wrong way driving accidents that occur in the state every year, will be very pleased at systems that act on behalf of the motorist to bring the car to a stop when he makes a driving error. Obviously, this greatly decreases the risk of an accident. It also dramatically reduces the impact of driver error in traffic accidents.
Intel is moving fast with its plans to have the systems installed in a number of vehicles. It is currently in talks with auto manufacturers. Any enhancement in auto safety technologies can only be good for motorists and passengers. The next decade promises to be an exciting one, as automakers compete with each other to introduce sophisticated safety systems that can prevent accidents and minimize injuries.
