NHTSA Data Indicates Increase in Traffic Accident Deaths Involving Male Baby Boomers

Data from the federal administration indicates that traffic accident fatalities among male baby boomers have increased between 2000 and 2009.  Further, the data also suggests that there has been an increase in the number of DUI accident fatalities during this period of time among both male and female baby boomers.

According to the data by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s Fatality Analysis Reporting System, the number of accident fatalities involving male baby boomers aged between 51 and 65 years of age increased by a staggering 25% during the study period.  During the same period of time, accident fatalities involving all drivers declined by 20%.  Besides, there was also a decline in the numbers of female driver fatalities of the same age group during this time.  The female accident fatality rate between 2000 and 2009 actually declined by 20%.

There’s more for Los Angeles car accident lawyers to be concerned about.  The analysis also revealed that there has been an increase in drunk driving accident fatalities among both male and female motorists of this age group.  Male and female drivers between 51 and 65 years of age are being involved in more and more fatal drunk driving accidents.  According to the data, the number of DUI accident fatalities in this age group increased by 37% during the study period.  That is a staggering increase in the number of people belonging to a particular group, being killed in drunk driving accidents.  During the same period of time, overall drunk driving accident fatalities involving all groups of drivers from around the country, actually declined by 7%.

More research is needed to understand the causes of this increase in male baby boomer traffic accident fatalities and the increase in drunk driving accident fatalities for baby boomers of both genders.  Over the past decade, there has been a lot of focus on preventing accidents involving the elderly and teenage motorists.  The focus on teen and senior driver safety has been especially necessary, because automobile accidents are the number one cause of death for teenagers, and because of the fact that there is an increasing elder driver population in California.  It is very important that traffic safety agencies focus harder on reducing accident rates among these drivers.  However, could all this focus on teen driver and elder driver safety have led to a neglect of other motorists, especially baby boomers?

At this point in time, it is hard to pinpoint the reasons for this increase among baby boomer traffic accident realities.   The analysts are calling for more research into the causes of this increase in baby boomer traffic accidents.  This much is clear- baby boomers are simply not following the traffic safety advice that they give their children.
