Increase in Number of Concussions in Children

Concussions in Children

Children have suffered concussions while engaged in sports and other recreational activities

Increase in number of concussions in children is reported by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. There was a staggering increase in the number of children and adolescents who were rushed to hospital emergency rooms with concussions over an eight-year period ending in 2009.

Emergency room visits for brain injury involving children and adolescents increased from 153,375 in 2001 to 248,418 in 2009.  That was an increase of more than 60%.  The children who were monitored in the study were below nineteen years.  They have suffered concussions while engaged in sports and other recreational activities.

The sports that were most likely to lead to brain injuries were football, bicycling, basketball, soccer and playground activities.  There has been a lot of scrutiny of brain injury in the National Football League.  Several athletes, who formerly played for the NFL, have filed lawsuits against the organization, alleging that the NFL was aware of the risk of severe and long-lasting brain damage caused by repeated concussions to a football player, but did not take action to protect them.

While much of the focus has been on the NFL, the fact is that many student-athletes are also at risk of multiple concussions when they play.  According to a report by the National Center for Catastrophic Sport Injury Research, approximately 4.4 million children who play tackle football, suffer more than half a million concussions every year.

However, the increase in ER visits due to brain injuries may not be a result of an increase in the number of injuries, but rather an increase in the reporting of such injuries.  What has really concerned Los Angeles brain injury lawyers is that many children may not get the kind of attention that they need after they suffer a concussion, and may be put back into playing soon after the injury.  A student who suffers concussions consecutively has a much high risk of long-term brain damage.  Brain injury experts advise that a child who has suffered a concussion be removed from play, and even pulled out of school until the injury has had time to heal.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention report also outlines a number of other factors in the high incidence of brain injuries involving children.   In children below the age of ten, bicycling and playground activities were much bigger factors in brain injury than football.  However, the cause of the injury also depends on the age of the children.  Children between the age of ten and nineteen were more likely to suffer brain injuries from football followed by bicycling.
