California Highway Safety Patrol, Caltrans Join Hands to Increase Highway Worker Safety

Highway Worker Safety

Over the past few months, at least 4 highway workers were killed in California

A recent spike in highway worker accident fatalities has caused great concern at our Los Angeles car accident lawyer’s office.  The California Department of Transportation is joining hands with California Highway Safety Patrol, to enforce speed and DUI laws in highway zones, to increase highway worker safety.

Over the past few months, at least 4 highway workers were killed in accidents in work zones in California.  Three of those deaths occurred during a 48-day time span between May and June.  The sudden increase in highway deaths was a surprise to Los Angeles car accident attorneys because they came after a long period of declining accident fatalities involving highway workers.  The biggest factor attributed to the decline in highway worker fatalities was the Slow for the Cone Zone awareness campaign.  However, this year, the campaign did not achieve desired results.

The California Department of Transportation and the California Highway Safety Patrol have collaborated in an initiative to increase motorist awareness about the importance of looking out for highway workers in a work zone.  The California Highway Patrol will station additional officers in work zones.  The hope is that motorists racing down a zone, will spot California Highway Patrol vehicles, and will slow down speeds.  Many accidents occur because motorists don’t bother to slow down speeds when they travel in a zone.  However, they’re more likely to slow down if they spot California Highway Patrol officers.  The California Highway Patrol is also likely to employ additional enforcement vehicles in some highway work zones.

Motorists caught traveling at high speeds inside a work zone will be ticketed.  The California Highway Patrol and the California Department of Transportation are being supported in this initiative by the Department of Motor Vehicles and the California Office of Traffic Safety.

Highway workers do yeoman service to keep our roads and highways safe for use.  The least that they expect in return is to be safe while they perform their often dangerous jobs.  It’s not as if highway workers are not aware of the risks of their profession.  Drunk drivers, speeding motorists, careless drivers- all of these can severely increase the risk of an accident involving highway workers.  However, there is little that a highway worker can do to protect himself when he is in the path of a driver traveling at excessive speeds.

One of the biggest factors in highway accidents is motorists driving at reckless speeds.  It’s important for drivers to drop speeds when they enter a work zone.  A zone will have speed limits posted just at the entrance, and these speed limits must be adhered to until the motorist is safely out of the zone.
