IKEA Recalled Wardrobe Doors due to Laceration Hazards

IKEA recall

Consumers are advised to contact their local IKEA store for replacements

IKEA, the Consumer Product Safety Commission and Health Canada have announced a massive recall of glass mirrored wardrobe doors, because of the risk that these doors may unexpectedly detach and fall. IKEA recalled the wardrobe doors due to risk of laceration hazards.

IKEA sold approximately 1,700 of the mirrored wardrobe doors that are called the Pax Aurland in the United States.  Approximately 500 wardrobe doors were also sold in Canada between October 2000 and September 2011.  The wardrobe doors include a full-length glass mirror which can possibly detach, fall and shatter.  Persons who are using these wardrobe doors may be at risk of injury, including cuts and lacerations.

According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, the recall involves all wardrobe doors with a full-length glass mirror.  The wardrobe has the model number 101-604-51.  The product name is printed on the rear of the wardrobe door.  IKEA is offering consumers free replacement doors.  Consumers are advised to contact their local IKEA store for replacements.

There have been no reports of injuries associated with the mirrored wardrobe doors in the United States.  However, in Europe, regulatory agencies have been aware of at least fourteen incidents where the mirror detached, and fell on people.  At least one of these reports ended in a minor injury.  However, IKEA is not taking any chances and has decided to recall all wardrobe doors both in USA and Canada, even though no injuries have been reported here.  The doors were sold exclusively at IKEA stores for about sixty dollars.

Furniture-related accidents are a much more frequent cause of injuries than people like to believe.  Earlier this year, the Consumer Product Safety Commission estimated that approximately 180 people died between 2000 and 2006 from furniture-related accidents involving appliances, televisions and furniture.  Approximately 80% of the fatalities involved children below the age of ten.

You don’t expect children to be injured from playing in your home.  However, the simple fact is that children are in danger from televisions toppling on them, or being locked inside cabinets, toy chests, and laundry machines.  In the year 2007 alone, approximately 3,270 children were injured in accidents involving toy chests.  The children were aged between two and fourteen, and in most cases, the children managed to lock themselves inside the chest.

Safe Kids USA and Los Angeles personal injury lawyers  recommend that parents take steps to secure furniture and prevent furniture-related accidents.  One big mistake that parents make is placing television sets on low shelves or tables that children can easily access.  Televisions must be secured to a table, with strong brackets.  Wall mounted televisions must also be secured properly.  Toys, remote controls and other objects must never be placed on a television.
