Women above 60 at High Risk of Death after Suffering Hip Fracture

October 1st, 2011

According to the International Osteoporosis Foundation, every year, there are 300,000 fall accidents recorded in the U.S., 75% of them involving women.  The results of a new study that has been published in the Archives of Internal Medicine prove the serious dangers facing women in this age group from unsafe premises.  Women above the age of sixty are at least twice as likely to die within a year after suffering a hip fracture, compared to women of the same age with no fracture.

The result of the study has some findings that are very intriguing to Los Angeles slip and fall accident lawyers.  For instance, the research shows that women between 60 and 65 years of age have a much higher risk of dying within a year after suffering a hip fracture, then those in their 70s and 80s.  The researchers analyzed more than 1,000 women who had suffered a fracture, and compared their health with other healthy women.  Each patient in the study was compared with four women with no fracture.

The researchers found that in the 70 to 79 age group, the risk of suffering a hip fracture increased the woman’s chance of dying within a year after the fracture.  Among women aged eighty and above, the rates of dying after the fracture were the same as women who did not suffer a fracture.

More worryingly, in women above the age of 65, the risks of dying were the highest within the first few months of injury.  In more than half of the cases, the deaths occurred within three months of the fracture, and in more than three quarters of the cases, death occurred within six months of the fracture.  In women above the age of 70, the risk of dying after a fracture declined after the one-year period was over.  However, in the case of women between 65 and 70, the risk of dying continued for as long as ten years after the fracture.

According to the study, the highest risk of dying from a fracture seemed to exist in the 65 to 70 age group.  There’s no explanation as to why this is so.  However, researchers believe the injury affects the health of these women in a manner that increases the risk of death.   There are some theories being bandied about for this increased risk of death after a hip fracture in elderly women.  One possible factor that Los Angeles and fall accident lawyers can think of is the severe stress that these women are under.  A fracture can require hospitalization, and increased medical expenses.  Additionally, women may be required to undergo surgery, placing further stress on their health.
