Highway Accident Indicates Need for Driving Safely in Conditions of Poor Visibility

driving safely in conditions of poor visibility

Motorists should be more aware of the techniques of driving safely in conditions of poor visibility.

Last week, a deadly multi-vehicle accident in Florida was blamed on poor visibility conditions after smoke from a brush fire lowered visibility on the highway.

The accident killed 10 people.  In the wake of this accident, San Diego car accident lawyers would encourage motorists to focus on driving safely in conditions  of poor visibility. The car crash occurred when smoke from a brush fire traveled onto Interstate 75 near Gainesville, Florida.  Vehicles began driving into the smoke, and very soon, began colliding with each other.  In all, close to 20 vehicles including 6 tractor-trailers were involved in the accident.  10 people were killed in the tragedy, and 18 people have been seriously injured.  That stretch of interstate had been closed down because of the smoke, but transportation officials decided to open up the highway again.  That decision is now being investigated.

Driving a car requires 100% concentration and attention even in the best of conditions, and even more so when you are dealing with poor visibility.  Distracted driving should be avoided in all kinds of conditions, and especially when you are driving in poor visibility.  Switch off all kinds of distractions in your car.  Switch off the radio and the music system, and ignore your phone.

Accident risks also increase in foggy or rainy weather conditions.  During such times, it’s even more important that motorists buckle up, and make sure everybody is in the car is also buckled up safely.

Lower speeds when you enter a zone with poor visibility.  Check the speed on the speedometer.  Also, keep the lights on low beam.  High beam lights can actually lower visibility.  If you want to pull off the road, signal before you pull over.  Once you pull over, make sure that the hazard lights are switched on immediately.  Look for painted road markings, and other signs to help you drive safely.  Brake only after you have given drivers behind you plenty of time to slow down as well.

It’s not just bad weather that can lead to poor visibility conditions.  Any motorist driving at night is also at a high risk of accidents, because visual cues are not that evident in the dark.
