New Year's Eve night is considered to have the highest amount of drunk driving accidents during the whole year

The New Year’s holiday is one of those holidays that sees the maximum amount of alcohol consumption.  It should come as no surprise to find that the maximum number of drunk driving accidents on New Year’s Eve is the highest during the whole year.

Los Angeles car accident lawyers are aware of the increased number of alcohol-related car accidents that occur on this holiday.  According to research by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, the New Year’s holiday sees more drunk driving accidents compared to any other day of the year.  Approximately 50% of drunk driving accidents that occur on this holiday involve motorists driving with a blood-alcohol level of .08% or more.  That is the legally allowed limit of intoxication.

According to the analysis, Fourth of July is the 2nd most deadly day for drunk driving in the country.  Approximately 42% of all fatal accidents on this holiday involve a motorist driving under the influence of alcohol.  In third place is March 18, which also includes St. Patrick’s Day, typically another holiday that sees massive consumption of alcohol.  On this day, approximately 40% of all accidents involve a motorist driving under the influence of alcohol.

Los Angeles car accident lawyers expect the 2012 New Year’s holiday to see even more number of drunk driving accidents than previous years.  This year, New Year’s Eve falls on a Saturday, which for a lot of people could mean a combination of weekend revelry and New Year’s celebrations.

While there has been a lot of focus on reducing the number of people who are distracted while driving, it’s important to remember that alcohol continues to be a major factor in fatal car accidents in California.  In fact, alcohol is the 2nd biggest factor in traffic accident fatalities every year.  The number of people being killed in accidents caused by drivers talking on the cell phone or texting while driving are increasing, but those numbers are nowhere near as high as people killed in accidents involving a drunk driver.

In 2012, there are some resolutions that we would like to see all California drivers make.  Avoid drinking and driving.  Do all you can to prevent friends from drinking and driving.  If you see a drunk driver, call 911 immediately.  A drunk driver can be recognized by his reckless driving.  These drivers typically weave between lanes, drive the wrong way on the highway, or drive at excessive speeds.
