Green Bay Packers’ Spencer Havner Arrested after Motorcycle Accident in California

Green Bay Packers tight end Spencer Havner was arrested over the weekend, after he was involved in a motorcycle accident from riding intoxicated.

The accident occurred on Saturday morning, when Havner was riding his motorcycle in Nevada County. He seems to have lost control of his motorcycle and crashed. He was injured and rushed to a local hospital. California Highway Patrol officers who arrived at the hospital found him to be intoxicated. He was smelling heavily of alcohol, and was “babbling” incoherently, reports say. According to California Highway Patrol officers, Havner had no recollection of how the accident occurred, and could not say whether he fell off of the bike, or hit something before being thrown off the bike. He sustained serious injuries in the accident, including a fractured shoulder blade, and multiple lacerations to his arm and head. Havner was also riding without a helmet.

Blood alcohol samples have been drawn, but the results have not been released yet. However, judging by his conduct and behavior post the crash, California Highway Patrol officers believe the intoxication level could be greater than the minimum legally allowed limit of .08%.

It is extremely fortunate that Havner was riding alone on his motorcycle. An accident as severe as this could have caused serious injuries to a second rider, or could have even resulted in death.

This accident is a good case to illustrate the importance of safe motorcycle riding practices. Motorcyclists must know that they’re battling terribly uneven odds that are stacked heavily against them. In any accident involving a motorcycle and another vehicle or stationary object, it is the motorcycle rider who is at the highest risk of serious injuries or death. Motorcyclists must avoid riding under the influence. This can be dangerously foolish behavior even if you’re at the wheel of a car, and it can be a recipe for disaster when you’re riding a motorcycle.

Ultimately, motorcyclists must understand that adopting safe motorcycling practices will increase their chances of getting home safe. As mentioned earlier, a motorcyclist does not have much protection in the event of a collision, and stands to risk serious injury in any accident.
