Furniture Accidents and Tipovers – Child Killed in Falling TV Accident

Furniture Accidents and Tipovers

Children most prone to falling furniture accidents

Fatal furniture accidents and tipovers are not a myth but reality. A seven-year-old Colusa girl has been killed in an accident involving a TV that tipped over on her.  The accident occurred at the Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church.

The girl was at the Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church rectory.  According to news reports, the girl and her brother were in the conference room and were watching television, when the girl got up to turn the TV so that her brother could get a better view.  Suddenly, the TV came loose from its cart, and fell on her.  She sustained head injuries and fell unconscious.  She was rushed to the Colusa Regional Medical Center, but died from her injuries.

Several of the girl’s siblings were also the scene of the time of the accident.  The child’s mother works as a volunteer at the church, but she was not in the room at the time of the accident.

According to the Center for Injury Research and Policy of the Research Institute at Nationwide Children’s Hospital, every year, 15,000 children are injured in furniture tipover accidents.  These injuries are serious enough for children to be rushed to hospital emergency rooms.  The data indicates that this is a safety hazard that is becoming even more dangerous by the year.  There has been a 40% increase in furniture tipovers and accidents since 1990.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission also estimates that approximately 15,000 children are injured every year in furniture accidents.  According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, approximately 27 children are killed in such accidents annually.  The data shows that between 2000 and 2008, there were an estimated 38,900 injuries from furniture-related accidents.  There were also 242 deaths involving furniture accidents during this time.

According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission data, most injuries and fatalities from furniture accidents occur in residential homes.  Additionally, more than 50% of all serious injuries involving furniture accidents that result in a trip to the emergency room involve furniture tipovers.  These include televisions tipping over and falling on a child.  Approximately 34% of the accidents involve furniture tipovers.  This furniture includes dressers and drawers.

Children between the age of one and five were found to be at the highest risk of being involved in a fatal furniture tip over accident.  These children accounted for more than 50% of all furniture-related injuries that were deemed serious enough to require a visit to the hospital.

Los Angeles personal injury attorneys would advise all parents take steps to secure furniture.  The most frequent furniture accidents involve televisions falling over.  Secure televisions to the stand.  Take special care about safely securing ultra light plasma TVs or LEDs.  Avoid placing objects on the television that would encourage a child to try to climb on the TV.
