Fewer Defective Vehicles Recalled in 2011

15.5 million automobiles were recalled in 2011, compared to 20 million vehicles in 2010.

The number of vehicles recalled in 2011 dropped from the number in the previous year.  According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, in all, 15.5 million automobiles were recalled in 2011, compared to 20 million vehicles in 2010.

In fact, the number of recalls in 2011 was the 4th lowest number of auto recalls on record. Honda led the list for the highest number of recalls initiated by an automaker.  In all, Honda recalled 3.9 million vehicles across 17 actions.  Honda also recalled 101,000 motorcycles.  However, even if San Diego car accident lawyers exclude motorcycles and focus only on recalls associated with the company’s automobiles, the company would still take top place for recalls last year.  Those recalls include several that were related to a side airbag defect with the potential for serious injuries in the event of an accident.  These side airbags can inflate too strongly, possibly causing injury or death to drivers.  According to Honda, there have been reports of at least 2 fatalities as a result of the airbag defect.

The 2nd highest number of recalls last year was initiated by Toyota.  In all, the Japanese automaker recalled 3.5 million vehicles.  These were spread across 13 actions.  Ford Motor Company came in at 3rd place with a total of 3.3 million vehicles recalled.  These recalls were initiated across 13 recalls.  General Motors recalled only 500,000 automobiles last year, while Chrysler recalled about 760,000 vehicles.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, a total of 8.6 million vehicles were recalled last year after the agency discovered that there was a potential safety problem.  The remaining 6.8 million vehicles were recalled only after the agency began an investigation into the defect.  Even that number was an increase from the previous year.

In 2010, about 5.4 million vehicles were recalled after the agency completed an investigation.  Sometimes, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration begins an investigation into a potential safety defect, which has been brought to the agency’s notice by consumers.  The agency doesn’t initiate an investigation for every complaint that it receives from consumers.  Last year, the agency began 144 such investigations.  That was the 4th highest number in the agency’s history, and was also an increase from 120 investigations begun in 2010.  Investigations don’t always lead to recalls.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has been requiring automakers to recall cars in the case of defects since 1966.  Over these decades, the agency has been recalled more than 500 million vehicles.  The highest number was back in 2004, when 30.8 million vehicles were recalled.
