Female Sex Hormone Progesterone Believed to Help Treat Brain Injury

Scientists are probing the efficacy of the female sex hormone progesterone in the treatment of persons with traumatic brain injury.

Scientists are probing the efficacy of the female sex hormone progesterone in the treatment of persons with traumatic brain injury.  Recently, trials into the use of progesterone to treat brain injury commenced at 5 hospitals in the United Kingdom.

Research into the use of progesterone to treat brain injury has already yielded intriguing results.  For instance, some researchers have already found certain benefits from the use of progesterone hormone in treating persons with a brain injury.  Progestins, which are synthetic versions of the progesterone hormone, are believed to encourage brain regeneration.  Synthetic progesterone for the trials has been sourced from a type of yam plant.  This synthetic progestin is believed to be safe to use, and has no feminizing side effects.  Progesterone hormones are beneficial on their own, and also when they are used in combination with estrogen.

The trial involves administering an intravenous infusion of progestin to a control group, and administration of an intravenous placebo to another group.  Researchers want to compare the recovery rate among persons who were given the progesterone, compared to persons who have been given a placebo.

However, other trials in the US have found that the death rate among persons who received the progesterone hormones were much higher.  Among persons who were administered the placebo, the death rate after the brain injury was about 30%, while among persons who were given the progestin, the death rate was about 13%.

It’s still far too early for San Diego brain injury lawyers to tell whether progesterone will play a big role in the kind of brain injury treatment that we can expect over the next decade.  The final results of these trials will not be available for a couple of years.  However, doctors have been encouraged with these early results.

Some studies conducted in lab rats in 2008 have suggested that progesterone protects the brain, helping lead to a reduction in swelling, and a much better chance of recovery overall.  It’s not clear exactly how progesterone helps treat a brain injury.  However, scientists believe it has something to do with the hormone’s ability to allow a healthy and constant supply of blood to the brain.  Progesterone is also believed to lead to a reduction in cell death.  The hormone is believed to increase cell growth, and these properties are already being probed as part of studies on patients with breast and uterus cancer.  The same might also be true for persons with brain injury.
