Feds Seize Defective Christmas Decorations Fixtures

U.S. Customs have been receiving defective Christmas decorations from China

U.S. Customs officials have confirmed that they have seized potentially unsafe and defective Christmas decorations at the Los Angeles-Long Beach seaport complex.

The officials apparently ceased the unsafe merchandise between November 23 and November 25. The shipments were coming in from China where the decorations were manufactured. There were 2 shipments from China involved in the seizure, and the total retail value of the shipment was about $130,000.  The ornaments were lighting fixtures of Santa and Frosty the Snowman.  The fixtures came with fake Underwriters Laboratories certification.  The lighting fixtures had not been put through rigorous safety scrutiny.  Federal authorities therefore believed that the decorations were potentially dangerous.

According to federal agencies, persons who use these potentially defective lighting fixtures could be at risk of electrical shock.  These people may also be at a high risk of burns.

San Diego personal injury attorneys have been warning about the risks from potentially defective lighting and tree ornaments, and other injury risks this holiday season.  Any number of things can go wrong as you are decorating your home for the holidays.  Most accidents involve people who fall from ladders as they string lights, cut themselves on broken glass and suffer injuries in tree-related fires.

These fires are much more common than people realize.  When people use unsafe trees, or place trees close to heat sources, the result can be a fire that can destroy a house.  If you’re in the market for an artificial tree, experts recommend that you buy one that comes with a ‘fire-resistant’ label.  However, just because the tree has a ‘fire-resistant’ label, does not mean that you use it in the wrong way, or place the tree in close proximity to a fireplace.  Even with a ‘fire-resistant’ label, it’s important to make sure that your tree is placed in a safe place, away from inflammable materials.  If it is a live tree, make sure that it is a fresh tree, and not one that is drying out, and at risk of catching fire.

Never leave candles burning when you go to bed.  Extinguish all candles before you retire.  Many Christmas-related accidents that San Diego personal injury lawyers come across also involve defective lighting.  Never compromise on quality where wiring is concerned.  Only purchase lighting that is manufactured by the company, and has been subjected to all kinds of testing and certification.  Never buy cracked flights, broken lights or lighting that has exposed or frayed wiring.
