FDA to Tests for Fungicide Contaminated Orange Juice

Fungicide Contaminated Orange Juice

The fungicide is used extensively in Brazil, which does export a lot of oranges to the United States

That carton of orange juice you open every morning may not be as safe for you as you think.  The Food and Drug Administration has confirmed that it is investigating fungicide contaminated orange juice.

After the concerns over the presence of arsenic in apple juice, it seems that the feds will now turn their concern to fungicide levels in orange juice.  According to the agency, it is not too concerned about this presence of fungicide, but will increase testing processes in order to make sure that there is no widespread contamination of juice.

The Food and Drug Administration says that it was informed about the presence of fungicide levels in cartons of orange juice by an unnamed manufacturer of orange juice.  The company had found low levels of the fungicide carbendazim in its own juice as well as juice manufactured by its competitors.

This particular fungicide is not approved for use on citrus fruits in the United States.  However, the fungicide is used extensively in Brazil, which does export a lot of oranges to the United States.  According to the agency, testing found that the fungicide levels were approximately at 35 ppb.  That is much lower than the maximum residue set by the European Union at 200 ppb.  However, in the United States, there is no maximum limit for fungicide residue in oranges.

The Food and Drug Administration has already written to the Juice Products Association, an industry group, informing it that it will increase testing of shipments of orange juice right at the border.  Any juice that is found to be contaminated with the fungicide will be detained.  At this point, because the fungicide has not been approved for use inside the United States, any trace of carbendazim  in any carton of orange juice is likely to be considered illegal.  However, any existing cartons of orange juice are likely to be left as they are, because the Food and Drug Administration currently believes that there is no reason to be worried about the contamination of juice.

This increased focus on orange juice contamination comes soon after San Diego  personal injury lawyers found federal scrutiny on arsenic in apple juice.  The Food and Drug Administration has confirmed that it will begin testing for arsenic in apple juice, and is also considering restrictions for arsenic levels that are allowed in apple juice.  The agency says that apple juice is safe to drink, and that it has low levels of arsenic.  However, the agency has been criticized by many consumer safety groups who believe that the levels of arsenic in apple juice are far too high to be safe.
