FDA Says Botox Cleared for Management of Urinary Incontinence Related to Spinal Cord Injury

Botox cleared by the fda

Botox has been cleared by the FDA for the management of Spinal Cord Injury-related Urinary Incontinence.

The Food and Drug Administration announced that Botox Cleared for management of urinary incontinence in persons who suffer from spinal cord injury.  Botox maker Allergan Inc. has won approval to market Botox for the management of urinary incontinence in these patients.

The Food and Drug Administration’s approval is for the use of Botox to treat symptoms of urinary incontinence that are frequently found in persons who suffer from spinal cord injuries and multiple sclerosis.  These people suffer from a bladder condition, which causes the bladder muscles to contract during the filling process.  Typically, these muscles are relaxed, but in a person who suffers from a spinal cord injury or multiple sclerosis, these muscles contract while the bladder is filling.  This causes urinary incontinence, causing distress, anguish and embarrassment.  Researchers have found that Botox injections into the bladder muscles can prevent the muscles from contracting during filling, thereby reducing the chances of incontinence.

In October, the Food and Drug Administration gave its approval for the use of Botox to treat chronic migraine headaches.  The Food and Drug Administration says that since Botox Cleared for Management of Urinary Incontinence it could also lead to an eventual clearance for the use of the drug to treat idiopathic overactive bladder.

Patients who suffer from spinal cord injury and multiple sclerosis may suffer from urinary incontinence.  In fact, urinary incontinence affects 60% of all multiple sclerosis patients, and 80% of people with a spinal cord injury.  Urinary incontinence can leave these people in distress and social isolation.  Additionally, there may be other complications from urinary incompetence.  These include skin inflammation and ulcers, frequent urinary tract infections, and even kidney disorders.

According to estimates, every year, approximately 11,000 Americans suffer a spinal quality.  Most of these injuries occur in other accidents, but several spinal cord injuries every year occur during industrial and workplace accidents, slip and fall accidents or other assaults and violence.

Los Angeles spinal cord injury lawyers classify spinal cord injuries into two types – paraplegia and quadriplegia.  Quadriplegia involves the loss of sensation below the neck, while paraplegia involves loss of sensation in the lower part of the body, including the legs.  Persons who suffer severe spinal cord injury are usually left completely and permanently paralyzed.  However in the case of a partial spinal cord injury, there may be some hope for restoring function in the affected limbs.

There is no cure for spinal cord injury, in that there is no way to reverse the damage.  However, victims can undergo rehabilitation and therapy to regain some function and mobility, and return to a productive life.  Rehabilitation will include working on muscle strength and learning new techniques to accomplish routine activities.
