Exposure to Power Lines Increases Children’s Risk of Asthma

Even moderate exposure to magnetic fields increases the risk of developing asthma by as much as 75%

Children born to women who were heavily exposed to power lines may have a threefold increased risk of developing asthma.  In fact, children born to mothers with even moderate exposure to magnetic fields have their risk of developing asthma increase by as much as 75%.

That worrying information comes from a new study.  The results of the study have been published in the Archives of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine.  Researchers analyzed 801 pregnant women to study the effects of magnetic exposure on fetal susceptibility to asthma.  Each woman was asked to wear a small meter to measure her exposure to magnetic fields from vacuum cleaners, coffee grinders, microwave ovens and other appliances.  The women wore these devices twenty-four hours a day.  The devices however, could not measure high-frequency fields like those generated by cell phones.

The researchers then monitored the children born to these women.  The children were monitored over a period of thirteen years, using electronic medical records.  The researchers were specifically looking at the development of childhood asthma.  Overall, the results found that 150 children developed asthma during the thirteen-year period.  Out of these, most were diagnosed with asthma by the time they were five years old.

Women, who had the most severe exposure to magnetic fields, had children who had the most severe risk of developing asthma.  In these children, childhood asthma risks increased a staggering three times.  Women who had moderate exposure to these electromagnetic fields, had children whose risk of developing asthma increased by a staggering 75% compared to the women with the lowest levels of exposure.

This is believed to be the first study of its kind to confirm a link between a woman’s exposure to magnetic fields during her pregnancy, and the risk of asthma in children.  Los Angeles personal injury lawyers are aware of studies in the past that had studied the effects of exposure to magnetic fields in pregnant women.  These previous studies had found a link between exposure to magnetic fields and an increased risk of miscarriage.  Other studies have found that such exposure results in poor quality of semen and development of immune disorders.

The researchers are concerned enough about the findings of the study to recommend that women limit their exposure to magnetic fields when they’re pregnant.  There is definitely need for more research to confirm the increased risk to fetuses from such exposure, but the message from this research indicates that such exposure is never good.

Asthma is one of the most chronic conditions facing American children.  An approximate 13% of children under the age of eighteen suffer from asthma in the United States.  That makes it 9.4 million people in the United States with the disorder.  The incidence of asthma in the American population has increased by 74% between 1980 and 1996.
