Experimental Surgery Provides Hope to Patients with Rotator Cuff Injuries

Rotator Cuff Injury

A promising new surgery may help repair severe rotator cuff injuries!

Rotator cuff tears or rotator cuff injuries are very often the result of repetitive strain or workplace accidents. Orange County personal injury lawyers also find that these often occur as a result of slip and fall accidents.  In the case of minor rotator cuff tears, there are surgeries that can help treat the injury, and restore mobility to the person.  However, in cases of serious rotator cuff tears, treatment options for the patient are very limited.  Now, a new experimental surgery conducted in Georgia is promising new hope to persons who live with the debilitating pain of these injuries.

Currently, treatment options for severe rotator cuff tear injuries involve physical therapy, steroid injections and surgery.  In the case of a large rotator cuff tear, the doctors may choose to remove a bone spur or calcium deposits during surgery.  However, there are side effects to such surgeries.  Over a period of time, the person may develop arthritis.  In severe cases, doctors may suggest a total complete shoulder replacement for the patient.

However, doctors at Georgia’s Emory Healthcare Sports Medicine have experimented with a new surgical procedure.  The doctors are reattaching the defective tendon by using a surgically placed cadaver tissue graft.  The procedure has been found to have impressive results.  Currently, the procedure has not been approved by the Food and Drug Administration.  However, the federal agency does approve of the use of grafts to boost rotator cuff repair.

Rotator cuff injuries involve the rotator cuff, which consists of the muscles and tendons connecting the upper arm bone with the shoulder.  When there’s any damage to the rotator cuff tendons or muscles, a person may suffer serious symptoms.  These include severe muscle spasms and pain.  A person with a rotator cuff tear could suffer intense pain, and have limited mobility in the shoulder.  Inflammation within the joint can cause fluid to accumulate.  This can limit the person’s ability to move his shoulder further.  Besides, the person may experience gradual weakness in the shoulder, and decreased motion.  Over a period of time, arthritis may set in, and there may be calcium deposits in the joints that can limit the extent of motion.

Severe rotator cuff tears usually occur as a result of a severe fall, when a person puts his arm out to block the fall, resulting in the entire weight of the body falling on the shoulder and upper arm.  Sudden and heavy lifting can also cause a rotator cuff tear.  Besides, people who work in certain kinds of occupations, like painters who are required to use their shoulder muscles and tendons a lot, may be more susceptible to rotator cuff tears.  Baseball players may also have a higher risk of rotator cuff injuries.  Even simple everyday repetitive movements to the shoulder can cause a rotator cuff tear.
