Drunk Driver Causes Three Accidents in Simi Valley

A drunk driver is accused of causing an accident that caused serious injuries on Sunday night, soon after he fled the scene of two previous accidents.

According to the California Highway Patrol, 26-year-old Abdula Kwara left a party at about 7:15 pm on Sunday, and soon after, caused two separate accidents. The victims tried to follow him, but soon lost sight of him. A few minutes later, the drunk driver lost control of his car, struck the center median, and hit at least two other vehicles. The car careened down an embankment. One of the cars that was struck by Kwara’s vehicle, also crashed down the embankment.

The occupant of the car, 58-year-old Linda Sgaraglino, suffered major injuries, and was taken to the hospital for treatment. Kwara tried to flee from the scene of the accident, and was detained by California Highway Patrol officers who chased him on foot. He suffered minor injures in the accident, and was taken to a local hospital. Once he is declared fit enough to be released from the hospital, he is likely to be arrested on suspicion of drunk driving and hit and run.  The California Highway Patrol believes that Kwara lost control of his vehicle because he was driving under the influence.

Across California, the number of accidents caused by drunk drivers has fallen dramatically over the past few years. This drop has been due to the untiring efforts of the California Highway Patrol, city and county agencies and law enforcement agencies, who have collaborated to undertake anti-drunk driving campaigns. The California Highway Patrol frequently undertakes enforcements to crack down on drunk drivers. Special enforcements are carried out during holidays to make sure that intoxicated motorists are off the roads. Besides, there are community initiatives that help raise awareness about the dangers of drunk driving. Education campaigns targeting teen motorists and held in schools and colleges, make these inexperienced motorists aware of the dangers of getting behind the wheel in an intoxicated state.

These campaigns have all helped contribute to a reduced tolerance of drunk driving. Besides, California’s laws have become stricter over the years.  Laws targeting repeat offenders, who tend to be most at risk of causing an accident, have been passed, and these have made it harder for repeat drunk drivers to be on the roads. Even with all these measures, we still continue to come across drivers like Abdula Kwara, who seem to see no problem in driving when they are not in any condition to do so.  These motorists place themselves, and the lives of others on the streets, in grave danger.
