Driver in Colusa County Bus Accident Charged with Vehicular Manslaughter

We've always known that car safety seats can protect a child in the event of an accident, and can reduce the number of injuries and deaths that result. Now, a group of researchers in California have published findings of a study that reveals the number of infant and child deaths that can be prevented if children are safely restrained in a car seat.

The researchers published their findings in the February issue of the American Journal of Public Health. The study found that the risk of infants below one year of age dying in an accident dropped nearly 75% if they were safely restrained in a child safety seat. In the case of children aged between 1 and 2 years, the risk of death in an accident came down by 76%, and in the case of the 2 to 3 year age group, the risk of death in a car accident dropped by approximately 60%.

The maximum numbers of infant and toddler deaths were prevented in rollovers and light truck accidents. The findings have simply proven what defective product lawyers and child safety advocates have known all along – that these safety seats are very effective in protecting a child from almost certain death during serious accidents. In fact, child safety seats are more effective in saving children’s lives than seat belts.

In the past decade alone, close to 10 million car seats have been recalled by the manufacturers because of design and manufacture defects. A defective child car seat may either fail to protect the child in the case of injury, or may actually cause harm to the child. For instance, when the seats have insufficient padding, it can cause serious head and body injuries to the child.  Buckles that snap open easily can allow children to free themselves from the seat. Faulty buckles can snap in the event of a collision throwing the child off the seat during impact. Shoulder straps that loosen, safety belts that fail to hold the seat in place, and faulty design that causes the seat to separate from its base – any of these are enough to cause a child serious injury during an accident.
