NCRC Investigates 33 Dog Bite-Related Fatalities in 2010

Dog Bite-Related Fatalities

Owners fail to provide the kind of basic humane care that these dogs need

The National Canine Research Council is investigating approximately 31 dog bite-related fatalities in 2010.  According to the group, there were a total of 33 dog bite-related fatalities that year.

According to the report, in 2010, most of the fatalities were caused by resident dogs.  Resident dogs are those animals whose owners keep them isolated from positive interactions with human beings.  These dogs are very often restrained in chains in the junkyard.  The dogs have little room for exercise, and owners fail to provide the kind of basic humane care that these dogs need.  The dogs often suffer malnutrition, or suffer chronic diseases.  They are not given a chance to exercise, and do not have the opportunity for the kind of socialization required in order to avoid biting human beings.  Not surprisingly to San Diego dog bite lawyers, approximately 21 out of the 33 fatalities in 2010 were caused by resident dogs.

According to the National Canine Research Council, resident dogs cannot be expected to show the same kind of social levels and positive behaviors that family dogs who are given good basic care and given a chance to socialize with other dogs and human beings, do.  Only 4 fatalities in 2010 resulted in the owners spaying or neutering their dogs.  In 6 cases, the owner of the dog was charged with a crime.

The National Kidney Research Council report does not have a lot of information about the breed of the dogs involved in the fatalities.  In 11 of the fatalities, the researchers were able to identify the breed of dog, and identified 8 kinds of breeds that were responsible for the 11 fatalities.  However, in the remaining 22 cases, where people died as a result of a dog bite, the researchers were not able to identify the breed.

One of those 33 fatalities occurred in San Bernardino, California in 2010.  The victim was a 3-year-old child who was attacked by 2 dogs in a large fenced-in yard.  The child was able to access the yard where the dogs had been kept.  Another dog bite incident in San Bernardino resulted in the death of a 2-year-old child, who was attacked by a dog while he was playing in his own yard.  Another incident in Concord resulted in the death of a 2-year-old child in July 2010.  In that incident, the child wandered unsupervised downstairs where he was attacked by the resident dog.
