Doctors Recommend Quicker Processing, Hip Fracture Surgery

Hip Fracture Surgery

The plan recommends fast-track admission of persons who have suffered a fracture through the hospital emergency room

Most persons who meet with a San Diego personal injury lawyer after a hip fracture have been injured as a result of slip and fall accidents and auto accidents.  Doctors in the United Kingdom are proposing recommendations that call for the speedier processing of patients and quicker hip fracture surgery for these patients.

The recommendations come as part of a 10- point plan that was released by the Association of Anesthetists of Great Britain and Ireland, the British Orthopedic Association and a number of other groups.  According to the researchers, the new guidelines have been developed after looking at the current clinical evidence, and include the best practices for the treatment of persons with fractures.

The doctors studied the journey of a typical patient with hip fracture from the time he is admitted to the hospital, to the time he is discharged from the hospital, and made recommendations for how this process should be speeded up, and made more efficient to benefit the patient.  The plan recommends protocol driven, fast-track admission of persons who have suffered a fracture through the hospital emergency room.  The patient should be given multidisciplinary care that is led by auto geriatricians.  The plan recommends surgery as the best analgesic for hip fractures.  More importantly, the guidelines recommend that a person who has suffered hip fracture undergo surgery within 48 hours after he is admitted into the hospital and that the surgery be conducted by skilled surgeons and anesthetists.

The recommendation to perform the surgery within 48 hours of the patient being admitted into the hospital is to reduce the risk of hospital-acquired infections like pneumonia or other complications like pressure sores.  A typical patient with a hip fracture in England and Wales is currently forced to wait more than 2 days.  These persons are at risk of a lengthy hospital stay, and are also at a higher risk of complications like pressure sores and blood clots.  They are also at a high risk of fatality after the fracture.

Doctors recommend that any investigations to be conducted on a person with a hip fracture be treated with urgency in order to avoid delaying the procedure.  For instance, surgeries may be complicated in persons who suffer from a heart murmur, or are currently on antiplatelet drugs, because these patients may be at a risk of suffering blood clots.  In such cases, delaying operating on the patient is seen as a greater risk to the patient than any complication from these conditions.
