Do Nonprofit Nursing Homes Deliver Better Patient Care?

A new study finds that nurses at nonprofit nursing homes tend to be happier and more satisfied with their jobs, and therefore are capable of delivering higher-quality care to residents than nurses at nursing homes run for profit.

The results of the study were published recently in the Gerontologist.  The researchers surveyed nearly 900 registered nurses who were working at close to 300 skilled nursing facilities in the state of New Jersey.  They found that there were several factors that contributed to a nurse’s sense of job satisfaction.

For instance, when nurses found that they were in a position to help set the policies at the facility, they were more likely to enjoy their jobs, and deliver higher-quality care.  The availability of adequate resources like enough numbers of staff members at the facility, also contributed to feelings of satisfaction.  Registered nurses who worked in nonprofit nursing homes reported much higher levels of job satisfaction than those nurses who worked in for-profit nursing homes.

The study did not look at turnover rates at for-profit nursing homes versus nonprofit nursing homes.  However, they believe that nurses who are satisfied with their jobs are more likely to stay in their job for a longer time.  This contributes to a much more conducive work environment not only for nurses, but also for those who work under their supervision, like nursing aides and licensed practical nurses.  Residents of the nursing home benefit from an environment like this.

Previous studies have also found that nonprofit nursing homes deliver a better quality of care than for-profit nursing homes.  The reasons for this were always not always clear.  Beside the nurse factor, it might have  something to do with the fact that nonprofit nursing homes do not have to worry about profits, bottom lines and shareholder concerns.  When you’re not worried about paying shareholder dividends, you can focus better on the patient.   Nonprofit nursing homes rely on financial contributions and donations in order to meet expenses.

However, San Diego nursing home abuse lawyers would not recommend that families of elderly persons look solely at the ownership of a nursing home when they make the crucial decision about a facility for their loved one.  There are several factors that you should consider when you decide on a facility, and ownership is only one of those.
