Delta Plane Collision at Boston Airport Under Investigation by the NTSB

August 11th, 2011
The Delta plane collision is under investigation.

This is the third incident involving Delta planes in four months.

The National Transportation Safety Board has begun an investigation into an aviation safety incident that has Los Angeles plane crash lawyers very concerned.  The incident occurred at Boston airport, and involved a Delta plane collision that clipped the tail of another aircraft on the taxiway.

According to news reports, both the planes, a Delta Boeing 767 from Boston to Amsterdam and the smaller plane, an Atlantic Southeast Airlines plane, were on the taxiway and preparing to take off.  Suddenly, the wing of the Delta plane hit the tail of the smaller airplane.  The impact sheared off the tip of the Delta plane.  The smaller plane also suffered severe damage to its tail.

No fatalities have been reported in the crash, but according to Boston Logan International Airport, one passenger has suffered a neck injury.  However, the scene on the Delta flight was one of panic, with traumatized passengers screaming.  The passengers looked out onto the wing of the plane and saw that it had suffered serious damage.  The passengers described the impact as similar to being involved in a car accident.

The National Transportation Safety Board has now begun an investigation into the incident.  There is no information about why the two planes collided.  The planes were on runways which were almost perpendicular to each other.

The National Transportation Safety Board is likely to consider data from flight data recorders from both airplanes.  The Federal Aviation Administration is also likely to investigate the accident.

This incident was the third Delta plane collision in just four months.  The Atlantic Southeast Airlines plane in this incident was a Bombardier CRJ-900 jet.  A Bombardier plane was also linked to another similar incident at New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport.  In April, a Bombardier jet from Delta Comair was clipped by an Air France Airbus super jumbo jet at JFK airport.  The small plane was sent spinning 90° from impact.  No injuries were reported in that incident either.  Another Delta Boeing 737 was involved in a similar incident.  This incident occurred in Atlanta Hartsfield-Jackson Airport, which also happens to be Delta’s hometown.  In this incident, the Delta Boeing 737 plane hit the tail of another plane.

There have not been many injuries or fatalities in incidents involving planes clipping other planes on runways.  However, these incidents have been far too frequent for Los Angeles plane crash lawyers to ignore.  The National Transportation Safety Board needs to conduct a thorough investigation of this latest incident, to minimize collision risks.
