CPSC Warns about Bathtub Drowning Incidents Involving Infants

Bathtub Drowning Incidents

Never leave small babies alone in the bath seat in the care of older children

Pool season may be behind us, but it’s not just swimming pools that pose a drowning accident hazard for children.  The Consumer Product Safety Commission is warning parents about the high numbers of bathtub drowning incidents that take place every year when children are in bathtubs, bath seats and buckets.

According to a new report by the Consumer Product Safety Commission, between 2005 and 2009, there were approximately 600 reports of submersion incidents.  These incidents involved children below the age of five, and did not involve pools or spas.  Most of these incidents involved children below the age of two drowning in bath-related products like bathtubs, buckets and bath seats.  According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission report, there were 451 fatalities that occurred during this period of time in such incidents.  Out of these, 92% occurred at home.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission is warning parents and caregivers that children don’t need large bodies of water to drown.  Just a few inches of water is all it takes for a child or a toddler to drown.  This week, the Consumer Product Safety Commission released a new set of guidelines to help parents and caregivers avoid submersion incidents involving their children in bath-related equipment.

The most important rule that Los Angeles swimming pool accident lawyers would advise is to never leave your baby alone in a bath seat or bathtub even for a few seconds.  Do not leave your baby alone in a tub when it is filling with water.  Always make sure that your hand is on your child.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission advises parents and caregivers to make sure that they have everything that they need for their baby’s bath within arm’s reach so that they don’t need to leave their child alone to fix something.  Too many accidents are caused because parents just left their baby for a few seconds to fetch a towel.

Don’t over fill the tub.  For a small baby, just 2 inches of water is more than enough.  Place the baby on a flat surface that prevents slipping.

Make sure the temperature of the water is just right.  The water should be warm and not hot.  Infant skin may be more sensitive to temperature than adult skin.  The best way to check the temperature of the water is to use a thermometer.  The ideal temperature for baby bath water should be between 90° and 100°F.

Never leave small babies alone in the bath seat in the care of older children.

Empty water from the tub after the bath is over.  When the baby is old enough for a regular bathtub, attach rubber pads to the bottom of the tub to prevent it from toppling over.  If you baby is in the care of caregivers or your family, make sure that they are aware of these rules too.
