The CPSC reports that there has been an increase in holiday decorating injuries

More numbers of people are being injured in accidents during the most joyful time of the year.  According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, tthe number of people being rushed to the emergency rooms has increased related to holiday decorating injuries.

According to the agency’s estimates, more than 13,000 people were injured in holiday decorating activities, like stringing lights and decorating Christmas trees during the holiday season last year.  The data is for the months of November and December.  It is an increase from 12,000 persons injured in 2008 and 2009, and 10,000 people injured in 2007.  These people were injured seriously enough to be taken to a hospital emergency room.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission is also reminding Americans about the increased risk of Christmas tree fires during this period of time.  No one wants to think of their Christmas tree bursting into flames, but between 2006 and 2008, these fires killed 4 people around the country.  They also caused more than $18 million in property damage.  Every year, dozens of Christmas fires are reported in the state of California.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission has some tips for people to celebrate the holiday season safely this year.  As far as possible buy a live tree, but be sure to check for freshness.  A really fresh tree is green in color, and its needles are hard to pull.  A Christmas tree with needles waiting to fall off could be an accidental fire waiting to happen.  Place your tree away from heat sources like candles.  If you are buying an artificial Christmas tree, look for one that is fire resistant.  Again, take the same kind of precautions that you would be with a live tree.

Take care about the kind of lighting that you use to decorate your Christmas tree.  Use only flame-resistant materials.  Your lighting should come with no exposed wiring or cracked bulbs, and should be high-quality lighting made by a reputed company.  Don’t skimp on quality lighting.  Lights should be properly tested and certified.

Avoid decorations that come with sharp jagged edges.  Avoid any Christmas tree ornaments that have small removable parts if you have children or pets in the house.  If you are lighting candles in the house, extinguish these before you go to bed at night.  Use noninflammable candleholders.  San Diego personal injury lawyers believe that  choosing the right tree, placing candles and using the right lighting is all it takes to have a safe holiday season.
