CPSC Launches New Pool Safety Campaign to Reduce Drowning Accidents

July 6th, 2010

Pool Safety Campaign

Last week, the Consumer Product Safety Commission launched a new series of ads as part of its pool safety campaign for summer. They launched just in time for the Fourth of July weekend. The Consumer Product Safety Commission is partnering with the American Red Cross and the YMCA in these promotional efforts. The Consumer Product Safety Commission has produced a series of public service announcements, urging the need for caution and care in pools during summer.

Radio, print and broadcast ads have been created as part of the campaign, and these have been distributed to more than 2,200 media outlets across the country. The spots have been created in both English and Spanish, and will be aired on both English and Spanish radio stations to reach a diverse population, and ensure that the agency’s safety message reaches all. Many of these messages are available on the agency’s YouTube channel.

The main aim of creating these posts was to urge parents and caregivers about the need to remain alert when children are in and around pools, as well as the need to make pools and hot tubs as safe as possible.

The safety campaign stresses the kind of pool safety steps that California pool accident lawyers never tire of repeating.

  • Make sure that all doors leading to the pool are equipped with alarms.
  • Install safety drain covers in spas, pools and hot tubs.
  • Install fencing around your pool. The fencing should be at least 4-feet high.
  • Parents must have knowledge of CPR. It’s also important to remember that CPR techniques practiced on a child differ from those that are practiced on adults. Make sure that you know how to perform CPR on a child. If your child is going to be with caregivers, make sure that the caregiver also knows how to perform CPR. It’s also important that the caregiver follows all safety precautions around the pool.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission also has other tips for parents and teachers to avoid pool accidents involving children this summer. These tips are categorized under behavioral, knowledge-based and equipment based safety tips.

Behavioral safety practices include safe practices around pools. Never leave a child unattended even for a few seconds in or around the pool. Be alert at all times when a child is in a pool, and make sure that your child knows at least some basic water safety tips. This year, the American Academy of Pediatrics recommended that children between the ages of one and four be given basic swimming lessons in order to reduce their risks of being involved in a drowning accident. If your child is missing, look in the pool first.

Action-based practices include learning how to swim, and learning how to perform CPR on adults as well as children.

Equipment-based practices include installing fencing around the pool, safety latches on your doors, as well as pool covers and pool alarms. Keep life saving equipment like life rings, around the pool.
