Consumer Product Safety Database in Jeopardy

Consumer Product Safety Database

Consumer Product Safety Database

It’s just a few months since the launch of the online Consumer Product Safety  database, but already, the project is running into hot water, with some lawmakers launching efforts to reduce funding for the database.  Los Angeles product liability attorneys have supported the establishment of a database which, for the first time, would provide vital product safety information to consumers.

The website, Saferproducts.gov, allows consumers to post complaints about products that they have purchased.  Manufacturers of these products are allowed to respond to the complaints.  The manufacturer must respond to the complaint within a period of 10 days, failing which the complaint is posted online.

With the staggering variety of products out there, it has become difficult for American consumers to find out about defective products in time.  The recall process at the Consumer Product Safety Commission is a long and arduous one.  Not even Los Angeles product liability attorneys know exactly what happens when the Consumer Product Safety Commission contacts a manufacturer to draw attention to a safety defect.  However, it can take months of wrangling and negotiations before the company is finally pressured to announce a recall.  By that time, the product has likely been purchased by thousands of consumers around the country, who are completely unaware of its safety defects.

The online database was launched to solve all these problems.  For the first time, American consumers were able to access information about defective products posted by consumers from around the country.  However, recent developments in our nation’s capital have Los Angeles product liability lawyers  wondering whether the database will survive for long.

Last month, the House Appropriations Committee approved a spending bill that would substantially cut funding for the Consumer Product Safety Commission.  The bill would eliminate funding for the database.  The bill is likely to come on the House floors soon.  According to some lawmakers, the database is a poorly executed and implemented idea that harms business and does nothing to protect consumers.

However, in the weeks since the online database was launched, many consumers have used it, with successful results.  For instance, 1600 complaints have been lodged with the database.  Out of them, 104 were found to have errors by the Consumer Product Safety Commission.  Not surprisingly, the most enthusiastic supporters of the database are consumers themselves, followed closely by medical professionals who have been filing dozens complaints on the database.  Some consumers have posted complaints, and found that their products have been involved in a recall.

Unfortunately, our lawmakers seem to be paying merely lip service to the need for enhanced product safety.  We all want the products our children use to be completely and 100% safe, but lawmakers want to restrict access to a database that would help us confirm safety of a product.
