City Tackles Pedestrian Safety during Los Angeles Art Walk

August 22nd, 2011
Los angeles Art walk is an event that attracts thousands of pedestrians

Los Angeles authorities are concerned about pedestrian safety during the event.

Los Angeles authorities are cracking down on vendors and musical acts to increase safety during the popular Los Angeles Art Walk.  Los Angeles pedestrian accident lawyers have been concerned about safety  since the death of a two-year-old toddler in downtown Los Angeles accident in July.

More than 30,000 people are expected to visit the old Bank District for the event.  The Los Angeles Police Department is using officers on motorcycles, horses, bicycles and Segues to control the massive crowds.

According to the Los Angeles Police Department, the presence of increased police personnel had been necessary since the death of a two-year-old boy in an accident in July this year.  The boy had been in a stroller, when it was struck by a car that accidentally jumped the curb.

Los Angeles authorities are also cutting down on the presence of vendors in the area.  For the first time, food vendors, food trucks and all forms of street vendors have been restricted access to the event’s main areas.  These vendors have been banned from setting up shop in these places.  The Los Angeles Police Department says it’s important to restrict access to street vendors to discourage pedestrians from loitering about the street waiting for their food order.  Vendors have been banned from a four block area between Spring and Main and Third and Seventh Streets.

It is not just vendors who have been banned. City authorities have also banned musical acts and pop-up art galleries in the area.  Any kind of entertainment that draws pedestrian crowds has been discouraged.  The point is to reduce the volumes of pedestrian traffic that are drawn to non-art events and activities.

Vendors have already criticized the decision to ban them from the core of the event.  According to them, the City should have taken steps to prevent the fatal accident that killed the toddler, instead of restricting access now.

It’s unfortunate that vendors and other people have to be inconvenienced because of the cities directives.  However, it is imperative that the City take steps to protect pedestrians, especially the massive numbers of pedestrians expected to attend the Los Angeles Art Walk.  In the light of the accident just last month, it’s not so surprising that the city does not want to take any more chances.

Pedestrians can be at risk of serious injuries when they are involved in an accident.  Most pedestrian accidents, even those that are moderate in impact, can end with injuries like broken bones, fractures, crushing injuries, and more serious ones like brain injuries and spinal cord injuries.  Los Angeles has serious pedestrian safety challenges.  Although California does have some very pedestrian-friendly laws, pedestrians here continue to be at risk from negligent motorists.
