CHP Receives Federal Grant to Prevent Drunk Driving Accidents

November 18th, 2011

prevent drunk driving accidentsThe California Highway Patrol will soon receive funds from the federal government to undertake a year-long program that will help prevent drunk driving accidents in the state.  The grant was provided by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration through the California Office of Traffic Safety.

There is currently no information about the amount of the grant, but the California Highway Patrol will speed up anti-drunk driving efforts across the state with the funds.  The Impaired Driving Enforcement and Apprehension campaign will be conducted across the state, targeting intoxicated drivers and increasing public awareness about the dangers from intoxicated drivers.

According to the California Highway Patrol data, in 2009, approximately 40% of the accidents that occurred in the state of California were related to drunk driving.  These accidents resulted in a total of 752 fatalities that year.  Additionally, more than 11,760 people were injured in alcohol-related crashes that same year.  There were a total of 8,600 intoxicated driving accidents in 2009.  The California Highway Patrol is looking at reducing the numbers of accidents involving alcohol use, and the numbers of injuries and fatalities that these devastating accidents cause.

The California Highway Patrol will also use the funds to undertake sobriety checkpoints as well as driver’s license enforcement.  The agency will conduct DUI task force operations and intensify patrols.  The California Highway Patrol will also undertake an awareness campaign by conducting safety presentations at public facilities, and media campaigns that are targeted at increasing awareness about the dangers of drunk driving.

The California Highway Patrol will soon begin distributing funds locally, depending on the number of drunk driving accidents that occur in specific areas.

This grant from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration could not come at a more opportune time.  The California Highway Patrol as well as state and local law enforcement agencies will have their hands full keeping intoxicated drivers off the roads as we head into the holiday season.  From Thanksgiving through Christmas and New Year’s, Los Angeles car accident lawyers expect motorists to be at risk from higher numbers of drunk drivers.  Thanksgiving sees some of the heaviest vehicular traffic in the state, increasing the risks of accidents.  However, the most alcohol-heavy holiday of the year that California Highway Patrol officers will be specifically alert for, is New Years Eve.  More alcohol is consumed on this holiday than on any other holiday of the year.
