45% of the product recalls in 2010 were related to children's products

Child safety group “Kids in Danger” has been releasing an annual children’s product safety report since 2002.  The group has just released its report into the safety of children’s products and product recalls in 2010.  For Los Angeles defective product attorneys, parents and anyone else interested in the safety of products that children use, this report provides an interesting and precise view of child safety developments last year, and what we can look forward to in 2011.

According to the report, 45% of the product recalls that were issued by the Consumer Product Safety Commission in 2010 were related to children’s products.  In all, a total of 160 product recalls involved children’s products last year.  The most number of recalled products related to nursery products, with 29% of the recalls related to these products, and these were followed closely by clothing recalls.  The most number of children’s clothing recalls involved drawstring strangulation hazards.

There were several massive recalls last year of more than 1 million units.  In all, there were totally 11 recalls of more than 1 million units each, totaling up to more than 37 million units.  The largest single children’s product recall in 2010 was the McDonald’s Shrek Glasses recall.  This recall was related to the presence of cadmium in the drinking glasses that were sold as part of a marketing collaboration between McDonald’s and the Shrek movie franchise.

The most number of injuries from children’s products prior to a recall in 2010, involved nursery products.  The single individual product with the most number of injuries before a recall was the Step 2 Push Buggy, with 28 injuries reported.  There were five products in 2010 that involved more than 100 reported incidents before the product was recalled.  Out of these five, four were nursery products including, a gate, strollers and cribs.  The individual product with the most number of reported incidents before a recall was a trampoline, with 247 reported incidents related to its use.

Los Angeles dangerous product attorneys have been extremely concerned about the risks associated with the use of sleeping products, including cribs, and bassinets.  A total of 29 sleep environment-related recalls were announced in 2010.  These included drop side cribs, beds, and mattresses.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission has been under severe criticism from Los Angeles personal injury attorneys because of the slowness with which the agency initiates action when it finds defective products.  Last year, the agency was more proactive about taking action to make children’s products safer.  In 2010, the Consumer Product Safety Commission and the Food and Drug Administration warned consumers about the dangers of sleep positioners.  The Consumer Product City Commission also warned consumers about the use of baby slings after these were linked to several infant deaths.  The biggest move towards children’s safety in 2010 was the announcement of the launch of a Consumer Product Safety Commission database which will go into effect in June 2011.
