High Number of Child Near-Drowning Accidents in Orange County This Year

Drowning can occur in a matter of seconds

According to the Orange County Fire Authority, it has attended to more than 20 emergency calls involving child drowning accidents in 2011.  Orange County boasts the dubious distinction of having some of the highest drowning rates in the state.  Many of those drowning accidents involve children.  The summer, Los Angeles swimming pool accident attorneys advise strong precautions and alertness to prevent such accidents.

One of the first things that parents and caregivers need to understand is that it doesn’t take long for a child to drown.  Most parents expect or believe that they will be alerted when the child is in danger by thrashing and screaming.  In most cases, that doesn’t happen at all.  The end is deadly, quick and silent.

Summer is when more numbers of pool accidents take place in California.  The reason for this is that there are more children playing in wading pools and swimming pools at this time of the year.  Many of them are playing not just in their homes, but also in hotels, motels, recreational clubs and other facilities.  Additionally, summer is also when there are more holidays celebrated and more entertaining taking place.  Parents are likely to be distracted during these times, and are also likely to take their eyes off their children for just a few seconds.  Just a few seconds of inattention is all the time that it takes for a child to drown.

Children below the age of five have no understanding of drowning hazards.   These children don’t scream when they slip into water and don’t splash a lot.  Drowning can occur in a matter of seconds.  Unfortunately, most of the time, when emergency services respond to a home or a facility where a child has drowned, it is to recover the body, not rescue the child.

This summer, protect your child from drowning incidents in your home.

Pools should be covered with four-sided fencing.  The fencing should be at least 5 feet high.

Ensure that your pool gates are self-closing and self latching.

Children should never be allowed to dive in the pool, unless they have had proper diving training, or unless an adult is present.

Diving should never be attempted in a pool where the water is less than 9 feet deep.

This summer, give your child the gift of swimming lessons.  The American Academy of Pediatrics recently recommended that teaching children to swim can be one of the biggest defenses against drowning.  That doesn’t mean that a child who knows swimming can be left alone in the pool without any supervision.  Children need to be supervised by adults at all times while they’re in the pool.

There are a number of safety devices available in the market, including pool alarms and pool covers.  However, these devices must be used in combination with parental supervision.
