Child Car Safety Seats Protect Children, Regardless of Weight

Children are better protected when fastened properly in a car safety seat, regardless of weight

A new study finds that children, who travel in child car safety seats that are properly positioned for their height and weight, have a much lower risk of being injured in accidents, regardless of whether they are underweight or overweight.

The study was conducted by researchers at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia’s Center for Injury Research and Prevention.  Researchers were specifically looking at whether obesity in children was a factor in the number of children killed in accidents every year.  Automobile accidents are the number-one cause of death for children between the age of 1 and 14 in the United States.  Obesity in children is also a nationwide epidemic in the country.  The researchers were looking for an association between obesity and the child accident death rate.

The researchers analyzed close to 1000 children between the ages of 1 and 8.  The children had all been involved in automobile accidents.  The researchers found that there was no increased risk of injury for these children across a broad weight range.  All the children in these accidents had been properly restrained in a child car safety seat that was appropriate for their height and weight, and was installed according to the manufacturer’s recommendations.  They found that the child’s weight had nothing to do with whether he suffered injuries in the accident.

The study finds that car seats must be appropriate for the child’s height and weight, and must be positioned properly.  Children, who are restrained in seats that are too big or too small for them, may not have adequate crash protection.  Additionally, car seats must be installed properly.  San Diego car accident lawyers come across far too many cases involving injuries to children who were placed in car seats that were not properly installed.  A car seat comes with manufacturer recommendations for proper installation.  If these do not help you install the car seat properly, then there are car safety seat inspection stations that can help you detect whether your seat has been installed properly.

Recently, the American Academy of Pediatrics issued new guidelines for the use of car safety seats.  These new guidelines recommend that children be restrained in rear-facing car seats for longer than earlier guidelines.  Now, it is recommended that parents restrain their children in a rear-facing car seat at least until the child is 2 years old.  Many parents tend to shift their child to a front-facing car seat as soon as the child turns one year old.  According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, children may actually be at risk of injury if they are placed in a forward-facing car seat too early.
