As we come to the 12th anniversary of 9/11, our charity spotlight is aimed at Peaceful Tomorrows. September 11th Families for Peaceful Tomorrows began with a vision formed by a small group of family members whose loved ones were killed during the terrorist attacks on September 11th, 2001. The group’s vision became a reality as they read each others’ pleas for nonviolent responses to the terrorist attacks. The founding individuals met after meeting one another at a walk for peace in Washington, D.C. In January of 2002 four of these families traveled to Afghanistan to witness the consequences of U.S. Military action and wanted to express their concern over the casualties. The group then decided that they needed to unite with others to spread their message.
Peaceful Tomorrows began in February, 2002 and is based around a statement that Martin Luther King Jr. once made: “Wars are poor chisels for carving out peaceful tomorrows”. Dozens of members began to come together each month because of the shared belief that senseless violence was responsible for the loss of their loved ones and so speaking out against such violence was the best way ensure that others did not suffer similarly. They speak all other the world about their cause and by developing these nonviolent options and actions in the pursuit of justice, Peaceful Tomorrows hopes to end the violence caused by war and terrorism.
In addition to their speeches and other events, they have created a website where others can come and educate themselves on the many aspects of their cause.
