Cell Phone Use While Driving Biggest Concern for California Motorists

Cell Phone Use While Driving

Distracted driving was listed by close to 39% of the motorists as their number one safety concern

It’s not speeding or drunk driving that bothers California drivers the most.  It’s cell phone use while driving.  According to a new study, distracted driving is the number one safety concern in California.

The results of the survey were released by the California Office of Traffic Safety.  According to the survey, distracted driving was listed by close to 39% of the motorists as their number one safety concern.  Both speeding and aggressive driving were ranked at number 2 among safety concerns, with approximately 17.2% of the motorists concerned about these practices.  Intoxicated driving or driving under the influence of alcohol came in at number 3 with 12.6% of the motorists saying that this concerned them the most.

About 45.8% of people in the survey admitted that they made driving errors while they were talking on a cell phone while driving.  More than 60% said that they had almost been involved in accidents caused by drivers who were texting or talking on the cell phone while driving.

Intoxicated driving was not the major concern for adult drivers, but it was for young drivers.  Among young drivers between the ages of 18 and 24, drunk driving was the biggest safety concern.  Approximately 30.3% of the motorists in the survey in this age group mentioned driving under the influence as their biggest concern.  That was an increase from 11.5% in 2010.  Los Angeles car accident lawyers are intrigued by the fact that young drivers who have some of the highest risks for texting and talking on the cell phone while driving, do not seem to consider those practices their greatest concern.

The survey included about 1,800 drivers aged above 18.  The drivers were surveyed at gas stations across California.  The results of the survey were in marked contrast to the results in 2010.  In 2010, about 21.5% of motorists in the survey said that speeding and aggressive driving were their primary concerns on the road.  Cell phone usage came in at #2 with 18.3% concerned about the use of cell phones, including texting or talking on a cell phone while driving.  This year, concerns about distracted driving have come to the fore.

However, California law enforcement is more concerned about intoxicated driving than distracted driving.  According to the Office of Traffic Safety Assistant Director for Public Affairs, although there has been an increase in the number of accidents caused by distracted driving, law enforcement continues to be heavily invested in reducing the numbers of accidents caused by driving under the influence of alcohol.
