CDC Calls for Lower Limits for Lead Poisoning Standards

Millions of Americans, especially children, may be at high risk of lead poisoning.

Current lead ingestion and poisoning standards in the United States have been set far too high, and as result, millions of Americans, especially children, may be at risk of lead poisoning.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, it is important that we review current lead poisoning standards, and set a lower limit to protect children from lead poisoning hazards.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the current standard confirms lead poisoning at a reading of 10 mcg of lead per dL of blood.  However, an advisory committee to the agency has reviewed some of the most recent statistics about lead levels and the kind of impact it has on children’s physical and neurological development.  The committee has now recommended that the 10 mcg of lead per dL of blood limit be lowered to 5 mcg of lead.  Under these recommendations, at least 1 million American children would suffer from lead poisoning.

Other federal agencies have also recommended the lowering of the lead poisoning standards.  A panel convened by the Food and Drug Administration made several recommendations several days ago.  The National Toxicology Program, which falls under the Department Of Health And Human Services, also recommends that lead poisoning standards for children be reduced to 5 mcg per dL of blood.

Several studies conducted over the past few decades have confirmed the harmful effects of lead poisoning in children.  Some studies have confirmed that children may suffer from loss of IQ, and impairment in physical development.  Lead poisoning can also affect the child’s physical and intellectual development, and delay learning skills.  There may also be an impact on the child’s cognitive abilities, his motor skills as well as his behavior.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, some of the most dangerous sources of lead poisoning for children exist in the home.  These risks exist in those homes that were built before 1978, when stricter regulations governing the use of lead in paint as well as house plumbing, did not exist.  Children who live in older homes may be at risk of lead exposure from chipped or peeling paint.

Children may also be at risk from the lead content in cheap imported toys.  However, San Diego defective product attorneys believe that the risks of lead poisoning from cheaper toys have been somewhat minimized because of the stronger standards’ imposed by the Consumer Product Safety Commission.  After a string of recalls involving children’s toys with high concentrations of lead content, Congress passed the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act of 2008 which set strict standards for lead content in children’s products and toys.
