285,000 Hyundai Elantra Airbag Recall due to Defects

285,000 Hyundai Elantra airbag recalls were made due to possible defects.  According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the first phase of the recall includes about 96,000 vehicles from the 2007 to 2008 model years.  According to the automaker, this recall is linked to electronic noise, which could cause the driver side airbag to inflated in full force.  The second phase of the recall includes about 189,000 Elantras from the 2007 to 2009 model years.  According to Hyundai, liquid spilled in the front console cup holder could cause electric problems, which could trigger deployment of the passenger airbag.  The automaker discovered the safety problems in the course of an investigation, which was begun earlier this year by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Toyota Recall Due to Tire Pressure Warning Light Problem

In yet another tire pressure warning light Toyota recall, the company is recalling approximately 22,000 sports utility vehicles with potential tire pressure warning system failures.  According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the defect could possibly increase the risks of an accident involving under inflated tires.

Product Recalls Due to Burn and Fire Hazards

The Consumer Product Safety Commission last week recalled two separate products because of potential burn and fire hazards.  In the first recall, the CPSC announced a voluntary recall of Golden tea lights for fire risks.  According to the recall notice, about 350,000 tea lights that were imported by Pier 1 Imports of Fort Worth, Texas have been included in the recall.  The recall has been announced because the flame from the tea lights can be very high, posing a potential burn hazard.

More Federal Oversight Needed to Minimize Cardiac Device Recalls

A new report by the Government Accountability Office finds that Cardiac Device Recalls were the ones that happened more frequently during a four-year period.  The report blames the Food and Drug Administration for this sorry state of affairs, and recommends that the agency enhance its oversight policies in order to prevent defects and recalls.
